the compiz works on my newer but not that older Dell with a bios date of 2002

oh, neither of my computers are that old

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-20 12:06:20 +0000 UTC]

that one was given to me...so i use it fort testing...I have never owned a Dell , until one was given to me..I always had IBM Laptops, in the early days , then moved to Toshiba Laptop and Alienware is my primary desktop

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-20 20:07:44 +0000 UTC]

You do know that Alienware IS DELL ...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-20 22:22:18 +0000 UTC]

It is NOW but when I built mine from scratch it was not dell..it was Alienware and had some partnership with Apevia for the tower cases ..and then I just bought a board and dual gpu's, cpu 650 watts power.... and built from there .only DVD RW not Blueray but yes I read that DELL was now Alienware recently

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-21 02:56:21 +0000 UTC]

Not as recent as I had thought, DELL owned a 'large interest in Apevia', as they also supplied cases for HP, DELL, Compaq and others...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-21 03:23:22 +0000 UTC]

jeez a regular monopoly Lets see the parts were all bought as a barebones 3 yrs ago..the case was Alien Turbo which was bought by Apevia ...the ram all slick Geil 4 gb blue heat shields ..nice stiff and still fast and no overclocking ..the only thing NOT alienware about it..is i did not spring for the glowing keyboard...but all the parts independant of being a fully installed assembled unit and sold by Alienware of circa late 2006 woould equal this unit built by alienware [link]

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-21 03:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's pre-DELL direct involvement, though no doubt was about the time that DELL and AlienWare were in negotiations to merge. Since Dell wanted the slick look for their own systems, while AlienWare wanted Dell manufacture process, and some of the laptop technology.

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-21 11:40:15 +0000 UTC]

I see now as Dell has that ADAMO book thats built like a mac of solid aluminum carved bock ..thinner and lighter...but still a Vista or Windows 7 product soon...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-21 23:07:02 +0000 UTC]

yeah that's the combining of Dell and AlieWare - look at AlienWare's laptop cases...

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-21 23:42:00 +0000 UTC]

hahh yes i see it and that PC Linux OS crashed my GPU it wouldnt scroll a whole page and made whacky lines of color all over my screen so I'll have to scrub that drive and go for sabayon or my fave old standby back to the Slackware ....
My Suse 11.1 still continues to be an excellent performer and never a hangup or a prob of all the distros I have always preferred SuSe but then when they became Novell probs occurred w open source ..but then they worked it out and for 2+ yrs again Suse Novell has been putting ou and excellent Open Source distro in Gnome KDE 3.5 and KDE 4.3 all on one 4.3 gb DVD So I run the Gnome 2.4.28 distro its the best one I have !!!!

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-22 00:37:08 +0000 UTC]

Nice! - I've always had an interest in Suse (seriously they have a cool logo) - What I want to do is build a box with about 6 500GB HDDs and put Windows XP SP3 on one, and 5 versions of Linux on the rest... set the boot options on the 1 logical drive (so I'll have a massive list to choose when I boot up each time.)

I actually just put the Elive back in...and this time figured out how to set it to samba server and ..many more updates came in..for kernel at least but is still gimp 2.2.17 and Firefox ( Iceweasel ) 2.5..still old 2006/7 in that respect but got a safer fash plug-in and well i like it nice eye candy But yes Suse has been my primary Linux since 2003

I'm really thinking that I'm going to mod this build and run Enlightenment as my desktop, since all of KDE and all of Gnome run smoothly in Enlightenment. (some KDE stuff is not working on this system right now, and since it refuses to install KDE, this may be my only solution without completely changing OS.

Yeah, I think I have - I'm going now to get the latest Blender and YafRay and see what I can create this weekend.

I'm making a computer - complete - inside and out - and will make an animation from it - it's going to take a few weeks.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-15 13:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!
So, you're doing all the wiring and soldering too? My husband used to put computers together from scratch. Then it got cheaper to just buy one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-18 01:52:09 +0000 UTC]

wiring yes, soldering no - installing components yes, running and hiding all wiring yes, installing Operating system and a other programs yes

And no it's still cheaper to build them, especially when you have 1/2 the parts laying around.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-18 17:33:28 +0000 UTC]

That's cool! So, you're using some older parts or are they all new ones?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-18 18:22:11 +0000 UTC]

90% old 10% new - with the latest versions of Fedora Linux or some Ubuntu/Kubuntu variant

by the way I'm running Fedora again as Blender updated and just didn't want to play nice with KDE 4.x

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-21 16:25:12 +0000 UTC]

I've heard that there were some problems with KDE 4.x. I hope they get that fixed soon! I like KDE.

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-21 17:47:18 +0000 UTC]

Well as of yet it's just that flash doesn't run right, (flash player) - I've got it sort of working but can't see everything that I should yet (maybe version it can play is 'old' or something.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-23 17:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Flash 10? Could it be a browser problem?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-23 18:18:32 +0000 UTC]

nah, it's Fedora 9 issue - I've just finished d/l Fedora 12 - I'll be installing it in a little bit, and then installing Blender 2.49a and GIMP 2.6.7 and GIMP Gap 2.6.x (GIMP's animation module - for editing and creating animations with GIMP).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-24 16:23:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm familiar with GIMP GAP. I have it on my Windows computer. I never played enough with it to understand it though.

Do you keep your /home directory in a separate partition when you upgrade your distro?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-24 18:50:43 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I save every thing to a NTFS external drive

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-25 17:18:08 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like an easy way to do it. I gotta find me an external HD!

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-26 05:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the other option is a NAS on your network (which is my next plan

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-09-28 14:39:22 +0000 UTC]

What's a NAS?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-09-28 18:43:27 +0000 UTC]

Network Assigned Storage (basically a case with some fans with 2 or 4 harddrives that connect directly to your router)
