I read your review of "The Three Stooges in Orbit" on the movie website. Rest assured that is _Not_ (as you feared) the Stooges "at their best" -- far, far from it. The Stooges' golden age was from about 1933-45, and the silver age from then until about 1952. Almost all of their work from 1953 onwards is best left forgotten.

Wow, it's been almost nine years since I saw that movie and the theater where I saw it recently closed. In my review, I was responding to a different reviewer that described the movie as the Stooges at their best. I know now it's probably not a great idea to refer to other reviews without any context, 'cause that can be confusing.
You know, I've just never liked the 3 Stooges. As a little kid, they seemed really unpleasant, and then I saw that movie, and that didn't help any. I've caught bits of them on the TV lately, though, and I don't seem to hate them as much as I used to. I'm actually a little curious about that new movie that came out not that long ago.

The thing about the Stooges is that their wild slapstick ("ADHD" as the shrinks would call it nowadays) is best absorbed in 15-20 minute increments. The Stooges specialized in that format for 25 years. By 1959, however, the industry market for "shorts" of that length had dried up, and the Stooges themselves had no ownership of the 190 (!) shorts they made for Columbia Pictures from 1934-1958. So the next-best option was feature-length movies. This did not play to the Stooges' strengths, plus they were simply too old for the crazy knockabout stuff. (Even with the best of comedic timing, it's just not funny to see old men get slapped or knocked upside the head). But their movies were fast and easy to make, and they were popular with kids, so they made about 5-6 of them, including "Orbit".
Speaking as a fan, I would have to say those movies are not how the Stooges ought to be remembered.
The movie from earlier this year got very positive reviews, even from people who would not typicaly like that sort of thing. I want to see it but just haven't had the chance yet.

I doubt that, unless you mistook three or four other people for someone else as well, given my profile isn't the only one on which you posted the exact same comment. In the future, I'd appreciate you not wasting my time with random nonsense.

Perfectly all right with me. It's weird, but looking at that drawing actually makes me laugh a little, which doesn't happen often (especially with some of the stuff I've drawn lately), so it was a nice change of pace for me.

Hi Dave,
So, now that I've had a chance to luxuriate in your gallery for the first time, I wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The grinning started right away, and never let up, and now my face is really tired! What a joy to be here.
Anyone whose influence map contains both "Bill the Cat" and "Terry and the Pirates" (it might be "Steve Canyon," but it's for sure Milton Caniff) is all aces in my book. And those are just the seeming endpoints of your eclecticism.
You've really got a talent for capturing the range of toon styles used in 20th-21st century pop culture, and your themes are bitingly humorous. What a kick. There are a few other artists here on dA who are doing this kind of work with high quality, and you're definitely setting the bar!
I haven't spent such a rewarding time in a gallery in quite a while, and I've already promised myself that for you I'll jump the queue of other galleries I routinely visit and get back here sooner rather than later.
Thank you so much for putting this material on display for us to appreciate!

Wow, thanks for the incredibly flattering words. I definitely know who Milton Caniff is, but he's not on my influence map; I just haven't had the opportunity to be exposed to much of his stuff. In this case, I think the sample you mistook for his was in fact by Eric Stanton. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

dannysuling In reply to rocketdave [2012-05-07 20:47:35 +0000 UTC]
Damn! You're right, of course. I changed my glasses to get a better look. The big boobs ought to have clued me in right away. In my poor defense, Stanton and Caniff really are similar in how they deal with facial structure: sloping eyes, heavy lipsticked lips, etc. And Caniff was especially feline in his depiction of Asian women (like his famous "Dragon Lady").
Stanton, of course, makes a great deal of sense to me as one of your influences. He was certainly one of mine, in many, many ways.
Thanks for gently correcting me.
The work of Milton Caniff is pretty hard to access these days. He died in 1988, and the estate holders have been very stingy letting his stuff get out. There are collections available, but they are extraordinarily expensive. Caniff was a strong nationalist/militarist, and loved stories of daring and intrigue. WWII was seemingly made for his comic-strip talent. His strips occasionally featured some extended bondage scenarios (tape-gags seem to have been his preference; I have a few excerpted strips from the '70s with examples). As a kid I was really, really taken with his drawing style, and that fascination didn't leave me when adulthood took over.

I have seen examples of Caniff's stuff in books, of course, but the most direct exposure I've had was seeing some of his original work on display at the Masters of American Comics exhibit a few years ago. I don't know how drawn I would have been to his comics as a kid, since I tended to gravitate more towards the humorous strips (though the Dragon Lady may have made me take notice).
