This is something I sketched last year, but I only got around to inking and coloring it recently.Characters appearing in this pic are:

My mother owned the books and I believe I read the first two ... though some of the other characters are making me think I might have gone further. Perhaps a summer reading project for Mom while trying to find something to do.

I remember those nights. I used to be ... still am if my mind is running away with me ... afraid of the dark. Pop used to say that the best way to protect little kids was to read them a story. "The magic within those stories will keep the kids safe. And since I'm your protector and father, it is my sworn duty to make sure you are kept safe," he said. He read me stories like these, but also Black Beauty, Gulliver's Travels, the Hobbit, and so many more. He told me later before he passed away that he was so desperately trying to make up for not being there when he served in the Navy. "Just trying to be a dad ... ," he said. I tried to explain to him that he was, but he always brushed it aside. It would be at his and Mom's memorial at Jacksonville Memorial Cemetery that I told the rest of the family just how much I appreciated for them not just adopting me, but also being my parents.
