Description
Based on the Oz series by L. Frank Baum and the illustrations of John R. Neill and W.W. Denslow, as well as Eric Shanower. Princesses Dorothy and Ozma chillax under a tree while the Cowardly Lion, Toto and Eureka hang out in the background. And if one looks even farther into the distance, a couple other familiar characters are visible as well.I'd initially wanted to fit even more Oz characters into the scene, but I was afraid it would seem too "busy" and throw off the balance of the composition. I'm quite pleased with the way this piece turned out, but I can't feel too complacent about my small accomplishment when I consider how many illustrations fill a typical Oz book or look at Shanower's Adventures in Oz comic in which every single panel is a friggin' work of art.

I don't know if Baum ever gave Ozma's pet pig a name, but I've decided to name him Patrick the Piglet.

No, his name is Ace! Β jk, you can name him whatever you want, I guess. Β Not crazy about Patrick, though; alliterative animal names just tend to feel a bit too easy to me. Β

I'm kidding; it doesn't matter. Β Ace did actually come to me when I was thinking what the pigs' names might be were I ever to find myself in the extremely unlikely situation of needing to name them, but it's not like my opinion is more valid than anyone else's in this instance. Β

I really like this. It reminds me of Shanower, in a good way. I think you nailed the composition - I agree that adding more characters would have thrown it off. You just need to do another one with the characters you left out.
And I love the way Dorothy's pose suggests the perfectly innocent intimacy of her relationship with Ozma in the books. I do think Ozma's pose is a little awkward - I don't mean that it's poorly drawn, but combined with her facial expression, it'sΒ as if she's uncomfortable having Dorothy's headΒ there. I think she could be more aware of (and pleased with) Dorothy's presence without suggesting anything too "adult." (I can see her holding the book, reading aloud to Dorothy while stroking her hair with the other hand - but that's another picture.)
That's a very cute Toto. He looks different from the usual Scottie / Cairn / Skye terrier - did you have a particular breed in mind?

Thanks for the comment.Β The comparison to Shanower is extremely flattering, though I know I can't really hold a candle to him.
I used a photo reference for Toto, like I did for most of this- I'm not sure what kind of dog it was in the photo; the title just said "puppy," but I'm pretty sure when I started looking for references, I did at least start out searching for Cairn Terriers specifically.Β
I actually did do a second pic with many of the characters I left out of this one.

I'm guessing you like Scraps.Β Well, as I explained in the description, I thought cluttering up the scene with a lot of superfluous characters would be too distracting, and nobody's design is more distracting than Scraps'.

Dave, I have never had the slightest interest in the Oz story, even as a child, so when I say that this is a minor masterpiece, I'm talking about your superb draftsmanship, colours and that other-world atmosphere that only you can create so convincingly. Brilliant work as usual.
