Well it's very complicated lol :D (Big Grin) It is about an uprising in France in the early 1800s. It involves an ex-convict, Jean Valjean, who went to jail because he stole a loaf of bread for his starving sister. He escapes from jail and is followed pretty much the rest of his life by Javert, a head policeman. Along the way, he "adopts" a little girl named Cosette from a dying woman and the second part of the story is more so about her falling in love with a student who is revolting against the government, Marius. It's a lot more compicated than that, but that's the main idea. The musical is very good and the movie that is coming out this winter looks awesome (It has Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe). The book is very long and the author sometimes goes off on rants where he spends pages describing things, but other than that, it is a very good book. You might want to see the movie of it or somehow see the musical or a past movie of it before you read it or read an abriged version first, because it is very long and could confuse you. (it confused me at first a little, but then I loved it)
