Depends on the client. The ones for the Dress Blessed line, I was actually paid at an hourly rate which was nice. The others were a mix of flat rate & contest entries (which means no $$ at all). But I find myself creating designs when I am bored or stuck on the train. Those designs tend to become part of my own line, which I eventually see a profit from.

Helping friends & family when they needed designs for things. Walking around my neighborhood passing out my business card & offering my services helped bring in more business. Then once I had the money I needed to get my own designs printed on shirts, I went for it. Which was a few years into being a designer. But you have to make sure you have the money to print on good quality materials, if the shirts are bad, no one will wear it. You also have to be willing to loose all the money you put into the project, because maybe no one buys the design you printed.
