Calliphon [2013-12-18 01:01:40 +0000 UTC]

Calliphon is a character that will be introduced in "The Eclipsing of Sirus C" - A Dryden Experiment story that is currently at the 50% mark and will round out my collection of Dryden stories now to be published in print in the Spring 2014.  (I missed the original deadline… Yikes!)

Here is a short Sneak Peak

“Well, then,” Captain Estury said.   “Is there anything else?  No?  Well, Mr. Temple, I have a ship to sail and we launch in just a few hours.  Should we say our goodbyes?”

“Of course,” Paul stood and the rest followed his lead.  “Good luck, everyone.  There is much riding on this voyage of yours.  And you, Major, for you particularly.  Don’t let me down.  Don’t let your family down.  Don’t let your mother and father down.  And don’t let the Federation down.”

“We won’t,” Jean offered though she suddenly felt a deep pit in the bottom of her stomach.  She hoped the feeling of dread was just the effects of the nanobots getting adjusted.

The group shook hands.  The Station Chief departed and the gathering broke up.  Soon Jean and Captain Estury were back in the cockpit conducting their final preflight checks.

It all seemed a bit surreal to Jean.  Her brother, Ryan, a genius computer hacker; her commander a hotshot Navy pilot who was a bit too cute and, she could tell, was a little resentful at having been stripped of his normal command to fly this mission; a techno-geek beauty who was obviously in love with the BII Station Chief; and an odd little BII operative.  How had she become entangled with such a diametrically dysfunctional group? And she could understand flying off to save her stupid brother, but what did that say about herself?  When mixed with an ancient, alien computer system with an IQ and a mysterious planet that was imprisoned beneath a ring of satellites, it made Jean wonder if she were crazy.  Were they all crazy?

What was the alien’s message?  She tried to recall.  Wasn’t it, “We are all dying?”  Dying from what?
