I know the one thing that helped me is that I started drawing from real life alot. The things you do for realist art transfers to all your original pieces. Say you decide to draw wings, you think to yourself "wait, I remember they looked like this", or you might even use photographic reference to draw. Say you want to draw a robot. You can design him however you want but it would help if you had a picture of metal to see how his surface should look. My advice, start practicing with real life, draw people and animals and ect. You'll see what I'm talking about.
