Your first time a DM? NEVER give any hints as to what might happen I myself prefer the game to be more about role playing rather that dice tossing... This way the game goes smoother and the players do not mindlessly gain xp, there is simply no fun in it... My latest adventure demands from the characters to be "themselves" not some Jacks, Peters or whoever. Moreover, do not necessarily face the players with foes, whom they can defeat Try to make them run and reward for doing it with style

Well S**T happens It is vital to make the players listen to you. Therefore, try to write some descriptions, beforehand, about what is going on. Descriptions are most vital, afterall it is them that shape the events to come, without them a single session of dnd is not more than playing naverwinter nights multiplayer

I make my own rules some of the 4.0 are good some of the 2.0 are good, combine them and and some of your own ideas and BOOM! you get one hell of an adventure. For instance, once in Icewind Dale my folks were wearing full plate armors (no cover from cold winds) so I gave them a penalty to everything especially to the attack -5 (for cold limbs )
