For the shading question-
All I do is pick a place where I want the light to come from. Then figure the body is curved, not flat, and places like the nose stick out, and things like hair overlap. So that means that everything under or behind should be darker, and everything closer to the light should be darker! Common sence! Another idea is to open your shade in your room, turn off your light, and stand in front of one of your mirrors and see how the shawdows on you look.
