Ah, yeah, read about that. Not sure what to think. I mean, yeah, the possibility of him spicing up Sonic with his own style made me a bit curious, but it just doesn't seem likely, especially for the 25th anniversary game.

But honestly, I really, really don't care what happens to the series anymore. It's not just because of the mismanagement, but even the concept of Sonic has lost its appeal to me. I don't think I have much interest in works with arbitrarily superpowered main characters compared to others in their world anymore. Nowadays I lean more strongly towards stories with characters that actually have to earn their powers or abilities through their hard work.

Sorry for the delayed and lengthy reply. Hope you're fine.

Yeah, I don't think that if Hirsch were to have anything to do with Sonic, that it'd be in time with the 25th anniversary. Still, god damn would it be nice to have some competent writers.

And yeah, I went through kind of a phase where characters that are arbitrarily more powerful than other characters, and the implications that made was kinda off-putting. Even today, I still kinda lean a little in that direction sometimes (e.g., using Sonic's fleetway backstory, Amy has her powers through her bracelets, Knuckles is the guardian of an all-powerful artifact), but then I thought about what the psychological impact of what that may imply, and how it can impact the characters. I actually thought you handled this exceptionally well with Concepts and Balance.

It's a bit of a give and take, yes in many ways I would prefer characters EARNING their status and not just given, but what can that actually DO to a person if they're in that position? I think it makes characters feel less idealistic and more interesting.

But I do get what you mean. It does come off as some characters being privileged. They didn't earn those powers or their social status, so why should they have them? It's such an arbitrary way of giving them value. But I like to flip that on its head. Okay, so you have been given this value, so what do you do with it? And what are the consequences of said value?

Of course, Sonic never really has explored this idea aside from the comics (and Boom, strangely enough), so that can be considered  meaningless. But this is why we have fanfiction writers. At least ones that are competent and aware enough (though this seems to be a dying breed).

And... Oh, wait, now I'm the rambling one. I think I got you beat in terms of lengthy replies, sorry. It's just a fascinating concept. All things considered I'm doing well.

I was rereading through Sonic Concepts, because God knows that there is almost nothing ever posted on Fanfiction.net that's worth reading any more. I still think you had something truly special with that series, and I'm still a bit sad knowing that 3 would never be finished. But, I can't really blame you: after all, it seems as the days go by that the situation for Sonic just more and more bleak.

Nice to see you're doing well on your art. Wish I would stop by more often. But I don't really pay all that much attention to Deviantart.

Hey there, nice to see you again. Thanks for your compliments.

I still feel a bit wistful about it sometimes, but in the end, I've really just moved on from Sonic to other things more worth my time. Hope you're doing okay, but if you find it difficult to do the same like I initially did (and currently still do regarding the recently concluded Gravity Falls), just keep looking - I guarantee you'll find something.

It seems sad that I talk about Sonic like this, but until things drastically change at SEGA/Sonic Team there's basically no reason left to keep clinging onto it. (Well, except the comics, I suppose, but it's still hard to compare to the truly brilliant stuff I've found since then. Archie's constant delays don't help either).

Sorry for the rant, keeps happening when I'm reminded about this, but thanks again for your visit, and I wish you the best.

Ughf. Yeah. I know. It's rough. Sonic's slowly being retooled to being Meme the Hedgehog, and the only thing that's worth following any more is constantly being delayed due to Archie's ineptful financial handling. Depending on how Sonic's 25th pans out, I may just...

Well, no. I won't. I care too much about Sonic's character, and I've seen far worse from the series in my time. I'll just find a way to persevere. I'm a Sonic fan, it's what we do.

In the mean time though, I'll let my wallet speak for me. There's other platformers, and they're doing more exciting things with the genre than Sonic has in the past 7 years. I've divorced myself from Nintendo, I can do it with SEGA too.

Hey there. Just wanted to say I was a massive fan of your Fanfiction series Sonic Concepts. Makes me sad that you won't be continuing it, because you were really writing some excellent stuff by the time you got to Balance/Sonic Concepts 3. Either way, I hope that you become a successful artist, or wherever you decide to go.

Hey Speedy!

I'm doing okay. Just focusing on college work these days, and in my free time I mainly play Borderlands 2 or watch some movies.

Hey, I gotta confess, thank you for contacting me again. To be honest it feels like nearly every other Sonic friend I know has disappeared (DC111) or even left the fandom (like :sonicspeed5 and my own social life in reality is really lackluster too. It's making my connection with Sonic fade away and has sapped my creativity dry. Worst of all, the only person that I could discuss this with, my sister, effectively told me that writers are supposed to work alone and not rely on friends. Great encouragement there.

Maybe it's really my fault, since I haven't been doing as much as I should to make friends, online or offline. I'm sorry I haven't been talking with you. And once again I appreciate the reminder that someone still cares. (It was my first reaction when I saw your message.)

Speedy1236 In reply to Explodering [2013-06-30 16:31:35 +0000 UTC]

Nice to hear you're doing okay. Are you getting along better with the new subject in your studying?

Actually, I'm in a similar situation when it comes to online friends. A few of them are still there, writing and talking to me and all, but a lot of people I've known for years and really liked talking to are disappearing lately. It's kind of sad. I actually wanted to know if you're still there. It's nice to know you are.

Writers are supposed to work alone? Why? I mean, yeah, the writing itself is a thing to do alone, but different people can inspire each other. It's always nice to have someone to bounce ideas off and stuff. I recently wrote a oneshot based on a series of a friend. It was cool.
My sister doesn't write, and she isn't a great Sonic fan either, but she occassionally talks about my writing to me, asking what's going on in my latest script. I think she just asks because she cares about me, not because she's really interested in the stories. But it's nice. I try not to bore her to death and not ramble too much. I'm way too excited about what I write.

Hey, no being sorry for something like that. It's not that I have been talking to you either. Just so you know, if you want to talk about something, writing, Sonic, discuss ideas and stuff, well, like I said, I like bouncing ideas off people.

Explodering In reply to Speedy1236 [2013-07-01 18:44:53 +0000 UTC]

It's better, I suppose. A few problems, though hopefully nothing that can't be overcome.

Yeah, that's what it's like right now. I feel no attachment or sense or belonging to any community whatsoever. I really only have you and one other guy left.

*shrug* Ask her.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Speedy1236 In reply to Explodering [2013-07-02 17:13:32 +0000 UTC]

It's not quite completely as bad in my case. I think I even might be making a few new online buddies.
Maybe it comes with having been here for quite some time by internet standards. My fanfic account is more than four years old, few people stay that long, and a lot of the people that were around when I started are gone now. But hey, maybe in a few more years I can count myself to the veterans, 'cause I'm not planning to leave anytime soon.

Phaenur [2013-04-02 01:06:42 +0000 UTC]

I said I’d review your entire series and I still mean to, but I’ve been busy myself lately and so this is going to be drawing more or less entirely on Concepts I. You’ve got a tremendous amount going for you even at this point, and with a little extra focus on your prose I could see an original piece in this vein really making a name for you. For that matter, Concepts really deserves to be more popular than it is, and if I ever remember my TVTropes account information I’ll write it the recommendation it needs.

Firstly, your dialogue is fundamentally incredible. This is for your writing what detail is to Pyre-Vulpimorph or body language (and raw cuteness) is to JudasFm. Every line by every character has been distinctive, in-character, and useful. You don’t waste words on trivial lines unless there’s a reason for it, and frequently that reason is emotionally powerful – just look at your scene where Sonic introduces Alan and Tails. That was exactly the right place to slow things down, and it gave the audience exactly the right blend of awkwardness, tension, and hesitancy to really make us feel for the cast. That is exactly what your writing should do, and in your dialogue at least you do it masterfully. Even at moments with less high drama we still never have any doubt about who is talking. Each character gets a distinctive sound – Sonic abbreviates everything and tends to chatter with medium-length sentences, Alan is a bit taciturn but definitely adaptable, with formal but never particularly distant language. Tails is chirpy, for want of a better word, and even when he’s terrified he’s still thinking. The other characters have less screen time, but the pattern extends to even the bit-piece USN officers. I have my reservations about your narration from time to time, but overwhelmingly that either builds the scene or at least carries it without interfering.

The characters themselves stay just as consistent as their lines indicate. All of their decisions and thought processes (or lack thereof in Sonic’s case) are understandable and generally complex, although for simple reasons of backstory the humans have more running under their decisions than the Mobians do. Even before we know the troubled pasts for Sonic, Eggman, or Tails (or the refreshing lack of any for Alan and Knuckles, give or take their training and past battles) they still make sense, which makes the revelations an “Aha!” moment rather than a desperate attempt to add “depth.” Every time we’ve learned what runs underneath someone’s decisions it reinforces rather than detracts from what we already know of them and everything they do after that. Perhaps most importantly especially given the source material none of your characters are one-note. Sure, Eggman was tortured and mistreated but he’s also in this for himself and has reasons beyond revenge or even simple conquest. Sonic lost his illusions back when Eggman escaped but at the same time maintained his cheerful personality and got his family back when he took Tails in. And so it goes.

Building on that last point, if you’re worried about writing original characters, don’t be. Alan stands very well on his own as a distinct personality separate from any tropes or especially clichés regarding spies and special forces. He’s not James Bond nor is he Maxwell Smart – he’s Alan Doherty, CIA, and he’s got his own skills and his own motivations – and, importantly but not centrally, his own situation. He never overshadows the other characters more than he’s supposed to as the main protagonist (and let’s be honest, Sonic hasn’t ever shown any in-game character development so I can’t fairly call him the main character of his own series), and his abilities are exactly what we’d expect from a professional case officer/paramilitary specialist. If that’s the quality of original character you can edge into a fanfiction, I’d love to see an original piece where you don’t have as many expectations to pander to and can organize your protagonists as they fit rather than as fans demand. And if you’re worried about writing a Sonic or Tails or Eggman expy, don’t be. Even within Concepts you’ve made them unique, and they’re more or less walking archetypes anyway. I can’t think of anything I’ve tried to write recently that hasn’t had either Tails or Ash Ketchum trying to claw their way to the surface of at least one member of the cast, and the Sonic team is if nothing else a very strong base for more complex characters.
