Farewell-Spring In reply to LovelessRapture [2015-11-08 14:12:29 +0000 UTC]
Nothing really, I'm just a bit too busy to come here, I use tumblr more now but I don't post much because I don't get time to scan often.

I am so excited to hear from you, it's been quite a long time!
I have been great, thanks for asking.
What about you? How have things been working for you?

I have been good. Conventions going well. I stopped using DA because I no longer have a scanner and my lost of internet connection makes it hard to upload images from a phone.
I really missed your art. It looks amazing.Β

Thank you! I am glad to hear you have been doing fine.
I actually participated on my first Convention a couple weeks ago, it went well, I did a bunch of chibi for keychains and pins, which is what I sold there, I should post them to my dA soon.
I also want to start working on a comic (my sister wrote the story) but don't feel quite confident with backgrounds yet.
Please tell me more about how conventions have worked for you so far.

Omg I am so happy for you! Congrats x1000!
I need to buy several prints from you cause they need to get on my wall.Β
As far as my cons go they have been really good. So far we have always hit goal. I and my friend Jess I believe her DA name is ekqo here. We managed over a grand at one con. Brought copics with that. So that our commissions would go faster. Most of our profits go to copics T_T because the onsite commissions really get us a great deal of profit.Β
We have our last con of the year in November. Β I am super excited for that one. Also do you happen to have instagram? Β It is easier to talk there. I would say tumblr but that is also haed to talk through.Β

No, I don't use Instagram, unfortunately, but I have Skype if you use that one. But I'm more active on dA and tumblr.
With onsite commissions do you finish the art right there at the con?

Yes I do finished them on site.Β
Aww my tumblr on my phone sucks. Haven't tried Skype. Β Will have to see how it works.

You must be really fast to finish them on site, I would guess, I don' think I could do something like that since I'm too slow.
How much do you charge for those comissions and how complex are the works you do?
Yep, tumblr is really bad for having conversations, I use DA mostly for that.

Aye! Sometimes I don't finish and have to mail them out. Gesture drawing practice helps a lot and using references. one con had to just tell people we are full for comissions for the day we had so many. Our prices range from 5-35. After doing research we found these prices work to our area and target audience. Β I would recommend doing research about how to price from fellow artist. I know that we came to these prices because we looked at what other artist charged and offered as far as commissions go and how fast we can grt them done. We charge more for color, extra characters, and backgrounds.Β We do sketch, portrait, waistup, and fullbody.Β
For how complex they get depends on the request. We do turn down anything bigger than 12 x 9 in. We have gotten quite a few armor pieces, cosplay, Tartis, and just regular con goers asking for drawings. Β
Funny story we were at a con with a first timer. His prints were 8 1/2 x 11 and that was all he had. His compositions were very simple with limited color palette. Β He was charging $20.00 a print and $50.00 for a set of 4. I cringed because it showed he didn't do research of his target audience. Cons in our area people want a lot of items for their buck. Not to mention being next to other artist with prints larger and cheaper didn't help his sells.Β

Thanks for the advice, part of the problem for me is that my city is so small there are very few artists and not many participate in cons, in example the last con I was at I was the only artist there, pretty much I only know of about 3 sort of professional artists on my city that work on this style of art. In my local conventions I have to compete with businesses not fellow artists, and lots of these busineses just take whatever images off the Internet to make prints, buttons, etc.
I will consider the idea of doing on site commissions once I am a bit faster.

Lol, I totally understand your pain with regard to the annoying requests to draw stuff you don't want to draw. As soon as a fellow human learns of my painting hobby, I get asked, "So like, when are you gonna make me one?"
...I smile, or laugh light-heartedly whilst inwardly screaming, "I'M NOT PAINTING JACK FOR YOU!!!!! DAMN IIIIITTTTT!" xD
