I've heard people sometimes will go back over their shiny dark areas with a harder lead, like 2B or something, and apparently it helps .. I've not tried it yet, so cant verify it works

That does help, to an extent (that's how I got that dark area on Madeline so dark) but graphite, by its very nature, tends to reflect light when it's struck from certain angles. This is really more of a "nature of the beast" type situation and even a desired effect, at times. The main times that I use the charcoal/carbon is when I feel that this 'shine' will detract from the illusion.

I hear ya,.. I have some charcoal, never used it yet,.. I may have to get them out and test them, I may like the result

Just make sure, if you use both in the same drawing, to use the charcoal first. It doesn't like to stick to the paper over top of the graphite...
