the dark blackish grey part is skin, the really pale grey is the greasepaint XD
of course this picture is rife with species headcanons (like the flat nose, the ears, and the dark skin since he's nearly an adult, all headcanons for the troll species XD)

what part don't you understand, His natural skin colour is an almost black colour, and the greasepaint is the lighter greys.
And some of the aspects of this picture aren't necessarily canon in the universe he's from. (the homestuck universe)

Sci-Fi stuff always throws me, design-wise. With Sci-Fi there's a very rigid design, myths are interpreted six ways from sunday and the creatures usually have a lot of lee-way in design
