You have to watch this:

That's good. Have you seen the Mary Poppin's one? Probably the best one I've seen in that genre of remaking a trailer to look like something else

You wanna go see Promethius when it comes out?

I've see that one, it's great. Those two are probably the best ones. I've tried to find other good ones, but they all seem to fall short.

Hey, remember how you think The Never-ending Story is full of poignant, positive messages? I think you'd better have a look at this: [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnBot In reply to monkeynohito [2011-03-10 19:12:48 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that movie is great. I don't remember ever saying I thought it was filled with positive messages exactly, just that it is about a kid coming to terms with the death of his mother, but pretty much everything in that article is true.

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2011-03-10 19:53:37 +0000 UTC]

Right, I can remember you talking about the symbolism of the swamp scene a few times, how it's about not letting yourself sink into depression. I guess 'positive morality' and 'my mom is dead' aren't as mutually inclusive as I'd read into your interpretation of the movie before, haha.

Man, the movie's messed up though. Even as a kid I had a feeling that there was something a little off about it all.

JohnBot In reply to monkeynohito [2011-03-10 20:51:24 +0000 UTC]

I think i talked more about how fucked up it is that Morla the Ancient One doesn't sink in the swap because he has become completely apathetic, and thats pretty messed up. It almost seemed like a better option to let the sadness over take you and die, when you become apathetic you just live with it forever.

It's pretty awesome movie though. Everything Gmork says is so messed up, not even taking into account its a kids film. I think as I kid I new it was messed up when I saw those statues with the giant breasts.

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2011-03-11 21:52:07 +0000 UTC]

I should watch that movie again one of these days. All the fantasy stuff seems really foggy to me, but for some reason I remember bits and pieces of the real world stuff a lot better. It all seemed more weirdly iconic and fantastical than the fantasy stuff, like there was deep symbology going on in the real world scenes, but the fantasy stuff was more just special effects and hitting you over the head with the subtext. Does that make any sense?

I remember some Genesis game that had breasts all over the place on statues in the background too. I want to say the main character was a grizzled dwarf guy, but I might be mixing him up with the clean-cut dwarf guy from Golden Axe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnBot In reply to monkeynohito [2011-03-12 01:39:00 +0000 UTC]

A lot of the symbology is super abvious(sp?) but when I didn't pick up on any of it as kid, at least not consciously. If you can keep a dry eye during the Rock Biters speech your just not human though. That's one of the saddest dialogues I ever heard in a movie, it's up there with Roy Batty dying in Blade Runner.

I don't know what game your thinking of. Alls i can think of is Choaniki.....(shudder)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2011-03-12 10:24:25 +0000 UTC]

Obvious.

But yeah, it's pretty easy to tell what's going on in the book world, but it seemed like there was more going on in the real world scenes than it led on. Like Radio Flyer 'What if the younger brother is actually dead?' or 'What if Cameron is just imagining Ferris and Sloan?' sort of stuff and I don't just mean the mother. The real world in that movie had its own strange quirks that were more subtle; it feels a lot like the real world of Stand by Me.

Anyhow, I got to thinking about how strangely clean-cut the dwarf in Golden Axe really is and popped the game in for a while. He just looks too good to be a real dwarf. His beard isn't intimidating or wild or epic, it's just way too trim and tidy. He's pretty skinny too. I think maybe he's a gnome disguised as a dwarf for some reason.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnBot In reply to monkeynohito [2011-03-12 15:41:24 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I was just thinking that it had a lot more in common with a movie like Stand by Me than most people would think.

Yeah, that is one unimpressive dwarf.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2011-03-15 08:17:39 +0000 UTC]

I watched Stand by Me tonight and it's really like a kids movie for kids that age. Even I have to think it'd be a little irresponsible to show it to a kid with all the swearing and smoking and firearm non-safety, but hell, it is the way kids are. Maybe it's one of those things kids ought to stumble across on their own, I don't know. A kid's almost guaranteed to call someone a 'pussy' after watching it though and, strangely enough, adult me has a little trouble condoning that, haha.

Anyhow, I think it's pretty similar to Neverending Story in the way that it doesn't wrap everything in condescending bullshit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnBot In reply to monkeynohito [2011-03-15 21:44:23 +0000 UTC]

Stand by Me is one of my favorite movies. That dead body used to scare the crap out of me more than anything in any other movie when I was kid. I think it's because they just made it look like a dead body and they didn't really try to scare you with this Oh! my God! look at that Dead Body! it's just kinda like, yep, thats what a dead body looks like and everybody knows it, even an eight year old.

There's a bunch of subtle detail put into that movie to that I didn't notice until about a year or two ago. There is that seen when Ace almost burns out Chris Chambers eye, and it's really the only time Eyeball Chambers tries stop Ace from doing anything, not that he tries that hard, but if you pay close attention you notice Eyeball has a cigarette burn on the corner of his eye. It's just one of the super cool details that take way longer to explain and doesn't sound like much on its own, but there that kind of attention to detail all over the place and it just makes it a really believable movie.

Man, Gordy's parents are assholes....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2011-03-15 23:07:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they are assholes. Also, his dad is Quato's brother/mother/whatever. Also, the guy who ran the store is the sheriff in Sons of Anarchy.

The crazy thing about the older gang is they're really no different from the kids, they're just a little older and a little more dangerous. I mean, yeah, Ace is a psycho, but he's just Corey Feldman grown up a little. He can't get into the army and spends the rest of his life in and out of jail. When the writer talks about them growing apart later on it's actually a little bittersweet because he and Chris Chambers eventually escaped the town instead of growing up to be the gang. I think in the end you can kind of see him struggling to find a way to really appreciate that time without putting some fake sentimental wash on it.

At any rate, the whole thing comes across pretty sincere. I think that's what I was getting at. It isn't sitting there telling you to be kind to disabled children or eat your vegetables, it's telling you the sort of story that actually happens to actual kids. Like you said, it's not 'OMG! Totally dead body, bro!' it's a dead body.

I've only played a couple since it took me a while to figure out everything that's on that handy first link I sent you. What's amazing is how little the mechanics have really advanced, there's still people who program in the old Infocom languages, haha. After you muck around a bit, you can tell there's a lot more going on under the surface, but it hasn't changed a whole hell of a lot for the player. Oh yeah, the porn games have actual porn in them now, so if you want to reconcile any of your adolescent frustration, there are plenty of them floating around. That's a huge advancement right there.

Check out Elysium and City of Secrets; they're both pretty interesting so far. I also got Nightfall, Vespers and Anchorhead which seem really promising. Oh, Bad Machine is fun too. You can find them by searching on one of the databases. Those aren't porn games by the way, they're just cool.

Yea, thats pretty awesome. I should read cracked more. I've only seen Paprika, you lent it to me a while ago. It was pretty cool, but to be honest I think I like the soundtrack way better than the movie. The Girl who Leapt Through Time has the best title.

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2010-03-20 22:22:33 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I'm just kind of sick of it. I thought Revenge of the Sith was pretty terrible, but the way people cry about the prequels, I just lost all desire to give two shits. It wasn't -any- movie or comic or novel that turned me off to Star Wars, it was fans acting like it was the end of the world if the media didn't cater to them personally. I mean, develop some critical ability before you decide that George Lucas was wrong on the basis of how much a boner you have for Natalie Portman.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnBot In reply to monkeynohito [2010-03-21 14:20:38 +0000 UTC]

I actually really like all the prequel movies. A few things bother me, but I just ignore them for the most part. I'm kinda sick of it to. They are what they are, just leave them alone now, but they won't because there is to much money to be made. And the geeks will argue forever about what is good and what is not, and forever hold interest, because thats what geeks do. And the kids will love it no matter what because they are kids and Star Wars is really fucking cool no matter what when you are 8. Thats just the way it is I think. It's like how I love the Ewoks because I was so young when Jedi came out, but older kids hated them because of how kidsy it made the movie feel. Enough of this though, I could go on and on about Star Wars for a while. I'm just as bad as the rest I guess.

monkeynohito In reply to JohnBot [2010-03-22 00:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I've been thinking a lot about this sort of thing and I think what it comes down to is there's a point were some people stop just being entertained by something and they start thinking they're entitled to it and the movie or whatever owes them something. Eh, I'll try to call so we can bullshit about this sort of thing.
