Contrary to popular belief, although llamas and alpacas do spit, they rarely spit at humans unless provoked. Spitting is a defense or used to show then they're agitated and to keep others away. They normally only spit at other lamas and alpacas if they get too close to them, get too close to their food, or in territorial/dominance tussles.
