Thank you ... I have done that kind of thing in the past but not for a while now. Legalities and releases have made it too much of a pita for me to deal with any more.

Oh, really? That's a bummer. You mean model releases for set up shoots, or just shooting strangers? You could always work with people you know, family and friends if you're interested in portraits. People always want pictures of themselves and loved ones.

Oh yes they do, BUT if the photographer wants to show them or even enter them in any kind of contest, by law, you MUST have a signed model release. In the case of minors, a parental release is required. There are quite a number of excellent articles on the web regarding releases and legal requirements.
In the end, you can take all the photographs you want, you just can't show them in public or publish them without releases.

Oh alrighty. And it was a problem getting models to sign these?

Not necessarily, but maintaining all of those releases for every shoot becomes a major headache that I don't want to have to deal with. Personal thing I guess.
If all you're shooting is people stuff for the people in the photos, it doesn't matter anyway. Just don't sell, publish, or enter them in any kind of contest without a signed release. Shooting celebrities/performers/politicians or anybody involved in public life is also an exception to the rule.

Do you do a lot of editing with all of your photos?

PixelBlender In reply to shojo-freshman [2010-09-12 11:30:44 +0000 UTC]
Interesting question. I had to go back over everything I've posted over the last few weeks to see what kind of editing I'd done to them. Short of the 'frames', in the last 120 photos, about 10 had more than just simple cropping and a bit of luminance adjustment done to them.
If there's any more than I would consider 'normal' darkroom type treatments, I'll usually indicate somehow that I consider the image a digital manipulation.
That is a tough question to answer. Where do you draw the line and at what point does it become an 'illustration' and not a photograph?
