Nik, would you ever consider overpainting a render of mine?
There is one I really adore the pose and expressions of, but failed to edit it in any way that can be considered appealing.
Combined with your painting skills, this could be so, so good.

Possibly? I mean it would depend on how time consuming it would be because that's sadly in short supply these days. :/

That wouldn't be difficult. Most of that is broad surface shading. It's just a matter of finding the time. I saved the pic so I may fiddle around with it if I have any free time. Right now I'm finishing a piece for the Dorian artbook project and like three comms at the same time so I've barely even been on the net. X_X

Thank god there's a chance. Thank you so much. Take all the time you need. What's the Dorian artbook project?

^_^ No problem. I like doing Cullrian stuff in my free time.Β
Ah the artbook project isΒ going to be a printed book of I think it's 30 fan-artists depictions of "Dorian in Tevinter" and all sales will go to an LGBT charity.Β David Gaider from Bioware may even be doing the forward for it, but we're not 100% sure yet. He's talking to our project leader about it. Me and KingCholera are doing it, I know Nipuni and Kauriart are as well and a lot of others from tumblr. My deadline is end of this month and I think it goes to print in October. They won't make a formal announcement of it until it's ready. I'll be posting stuff about it on my tumblr as soon as we're all given the go ahead.Β

I'm looking forward to it so much!
That sounds mindblowing. I didn't expect anybody to be in touch with Dorian's writer, either.
You guys are amazing. And you and KingCholera are definitely extremely good choices for a project like this. I wonder if elmroko is in, too.
They're really, really good, too, after all. I didn't know Nipuni was lgbt positive, but that's good to know.
Are there any guidelines for you guys? How did you get in in the first place? The leader picking people or did some approach them, too?
Is it suposed to Dorian only or are LIs allowed?

RaSen In reply to RainbowRenders [2017-09-16 23:36:11 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure. I don't remember the full list of artists but there are a lot of good ones. I don't remember if elmroko is on the list or not but I love their stuff.
Uhh, not really. Just "dorian in tevinter". The only trouble we've run into so far is color issues. I had a shitty laptop (had to buy a new one) that had bad color and I found out that all my pics were coming out WAY lighter than they should be. I was confused when I was contacted and asked to darken Dorian's skin because on my screen it looked super super dark but then now that I have a better screen I realized that all my stuff was like waaaaaaaaaaaaaay lighter than it was supposed to be. My old laptop had terrible contrast. Otherwise we weren't really restricted too much. As far as how I got in I was contacted by one of the people in charge and asked if I would consider doing it. I was super busy but I wanted to do it anyway since it was for a good cause. It's Dorian only (though other people can be in the pic). I imagine they wanted to stay away from LIs because every artist tends to ship him with different people and it would get confusing and adult super fast if we were just left to do whatever we wanted. Especially since those shipping with Inquisitors still wouldn't match because your Inquisitor can look completely different from someone else's and I think they wanted continuity. It's supposed to be celebrating Dorian on his own as a person.Β

Happy birthday, Nicole!
You continue to inspire me to get better at drawing (not only in the realistic field) and I don't know what to say other than, keep making amazing art and keep being the awesome person you are, have fun (or at least relax) on this special day and worry less about everything because you deserve the best. and no, it's not just something I say to anyone to make them feel better. I mean it completely. Have an awesome day.

Hey, just wanted to let you know I love your work and you're really really talented. There are several drawing styles that I'd like to master one day and I gotta say, your work really motivates me to try my best and become better at drawing in a realistic style. I don't know how many years it'll take until I'm good at it but I'll do my best.
By the way, out of curiosity, are you planning on drawing any DEG-related stuff in the future? And are you still active on YouTube? I watched some of your videos and I'd be very interested in seeing more if you ever planned on making more of those.

;o; Thank you so much!!!!!Β Β That's like the best compliment any artist could receive I think. Motivating someone else. From what i saw in your gallery you definitely have a good start. It took me quite a while to get to realism from where I was. I learned how to draw from comic books (western style not manga) and learning art from art definitely made it take MUCH longer because it taught me a lot of bad habits to break. The best thing you can do is just draw what you see, either in real life or from actual photos and just keep going. But don't just draw a photo, change it as you go so your brain doesn't just rely on copying what you see. Start small, change what you're comfortable with drawing on your own. Just draw something every day, it doesn't matter if it only takes 5 minutes or even if it's very good. It can take awhile and you'll make a lot of mistakes along the way but mistakes are AWESOME. Seriously. If you don't make them you can't improve so each one is one you'll be less likely to make again. Just do your best!! When i was younger I seriously was convinced that I'd never be able to draw something that even remotely resembled realism but I proved myself wrong. I firmly believe that anyone can be a great artist if they work at it!
I mean I want to draw more DEG related stuff, but I don't get much time for my own stuff anymore. I probably will in the future but I've been having to pick and choose what I want to do with the time I do get to do them and right now I want to do Dragon Age stuff, so that's what my personal pieces will be for awhile, but that'll probably change again and I'll be back to jrock. Who knows. Currently I'm not active on youtube anymore but I plan to change that. I've been trying to plot out some tutorials and just general "watch me draw" type videos for the near future. I really really want to get into kind of teaching/helping other artists because that makes me the happiest, but I need to iron out some bugs with my video recorder and whittle down my commission list before I devote a lot of time to that. But I'm hoping it will be fairly soon.Β

You're welcome!
I agree, when you try to copy a specific style you just get stuck at some point and can't really get out of your comfort zone anymore. Back when I was 12 or something I used to try really hard to copy the style of whatever anime I happened to like at the time and it took me about 2-3 years to get rid of the excessive influence that anime and manga had on my drawing style. It was really annoying.
And yeah, once I get a bit better at realism (especially with face features, that's like the hardest part), I'll try and change things, like... the clothes, the angle, or the pose of whoever I wanna draw. I mean, where's the fun in drawing realistic stuff if you can only make copies of photos that already exist?
Cool! Well, I'm looking forward to seeing whatever you come up with. You seem to be really busy with commissions and stuff, so good luck with that!Β
