As far as I'm aware, the characters don't have human designs in the show. However, I'm unable to draw animals and/or anything that isn't a human, plus I have no experience with a cartoony style and I think they would look weird in my style if I kept them as a sponge and squid. So I humanized them and gave them designs that I think would suit them.
