It is fun to see science and art melt together. My scientific stuff never looked that beautiful, which is why I used to run a fractal-rendering program after work. I am trying to create digitally lichtemberg figures as they are a special type of fractals. So far I have not seen it in the random creations.

Todd,
Awesome work here- love it. Did you use to work at the SciTech museum in Aurora? I think we worked together there in 96-97.
best,
Ray Hall

these are very cool. do you get to use the accelerators at fermilab to make these?

Thanks!
Unfortunately I can't use the accelerators at Fermilab for this, for a couple reasons. Most of them produce proton beams rather than electron beams, energies are typically too high, and also there's really no procedure to get time on them for personal use.

Wow. Your work is really fantastic. I particularly like One Hundred Nanoseconds. Do you have any work for sale? How do I reach you?
Thanks,

Amazing work! Truly changed my outlook on fractals as artwork.
I wrote a blog post about your work. (Feel free to tell me if any of my sciencey bit is wrong) - [link]

Hi Matt.
You can contact me directly at shockfossils@gmail.com if you're interested in a particular piece.
Also please visit the gallery of my associate at capturedlightning.com. He has a regular catalog of pieces, and usually does fully-irradiated panels rather than masked shapes like I do.

Radiation Oncology physicists have been doing this (sometimes unintentionally) with clinical radiation therapy electron beams for the past ~four decades. I particularly like the 3D patterns you can created in a solid block of acrylic. Oh, and once discharged, the acrylic piece is subject to later shattering.

Yes, we've found photos of these dating back to the 1930's, they were making these pretty much as soon as they had access to MeV scale electron beams.
The acrylic pieces are quite stable though and we've never had one shatter, even when dropped hard enough to chip a corner. Crossed polarizers show little change in stress after the figure forms.
Now we HAVE tried glass just for fun and I can say that this is a bad, bad idea. Some pieces seem stable for long periods, others crumble after a short time, and some explode immediately upon triggering.

Now this is an art form of nature that I really like!
Do you have a video on how any of these are done?
Its absolutely amazing! I bet they cost a mint to buy.

I was beginning to think I'd seen every kind of art there was, but harnessing electricity to make images is truly unique.
