i have a friend who has a lot of desire to shoot sporting events, but not much funds . . . he got the d40x recently . . . can you, or any of your nikon friends recommend a good lens for him? thanks

Sure... I'd recommend the Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G-AF lens, I paid $145 for it in Sept of '06. It's running about $10 less at B&H photo now (I purchased this lens through them) It's not a pro lens, but it fit both my budget and my current needs at least until money falls from the sky. I use it for all my Surf competition and Rally cross shots.
