Hey Diana, happy birthday!! I hope you have/had a good day today! Was just in the Sacramento area visiting family, and couldn't help but think of you-- I see why you mentioned wanting to move, the traffic has grown so, so bad ahaha. Anyways, happy Day of Birth and stay fire-safe!!Β β₯οΈ

OH DUDE happy birthday!! Even though things have been kind of rough on your end, I hope that you have a good day today and that you get to treat yourself to something nice. You definitely deserve it! One year done and another closer to your goal-- happy birthday, Talonz!

'Twas a good day (so far). A roadrunner stood 6 ft from me and I took a million pictures! Birds r gr8. Someday soon I shall be yelling at kids to get off my lawn! (That will have a million bird baths and feeders)

Oh god all those bird baths, get ready for "crazy bird lady" mode. I just saw your roadrunner pics on Tumblr, they look great! Hey at least one bird remembered your bday! I hope the rest of your bday goes well, dude. You've done great this year, so you deserve it!
(By the way, I just saw this and immediately had to show you . The best red tailed hawk!)

Hoo Talonz I've been keeping tabs on that condor cam in Big Sur and those babes are so damn cute.
I don't know much about birds so I was hoping you could answer something for me! What does the "wings spread, standing still while facing another" gesture mean? Is it a show of dominance? I've seen a condor do that twice and it's so cute-- I jokingly go "COME AT ME BRO", hahaha!
π: 0 β©: 1
Talonzi In reply to Ribbontail [2015-08-29 01:58:35 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, are they doing anything other than spreading their wings? Cause if not the bird might just be sunning and there happens to be another bird near it. Maybe if it is an adult spreading its wings in front of a juvenile, it is saying "I am your elder! Don't mess with me!" Condors have no qualms about outright bullying each other it seems. But I will ask someone with more condor experience or see if I can find the answer in a book! I too watch the live cam sometimes and I recently saw a bird spread its wings AND lunge at another. What is bird behavior?

Ribbontail In reply to Talonzi [2015-08-29 03:00:30 +0000 UTC]
Oh goodness, these condors can be so dramatic sometimes! It's adorable to watch the adults going about their business, while the baby fluffs around in the nest. Checking in is now a part of my morning routine. The wing spreading that I saw was just that, it just spread its wings and faced another on a nearby perch. The other didn't even seem to notice, which made it so much cuter. I love these guys!
...my husband doesn't, though, haha. While he was stationed in Fort Irwin (Death Valley), a condor once flew down and stole his MRE packet!! These birds are smart-- THEY know where the food's at.

Thanks for the watch back! I love your work.
I understand your angst oh so much. -_- I have a B.S. in Geology that has gotten me no where so far. I was also kicking around the idea of pursuing GIS since I already have background in it.

Thanks!
I know right? Just let me work full-time in my field! I do have a pretty awesome part-time right now but they strictly limit the hours and that combo of low pay + low hours is not enough. I do hear GIS is a good field to be in right now since it is used a lot and I think mostly only science people really know it exists?Β Β

Terra-Bites In reply to Talonzi [2014-08-21 00:37:25 +0000 UTC]
It is! I've applied for some state and county jobs in GIS but without a certificate I'm too underqualified. It does seem to be in demand though, which makes sense given its interdisciplinary applications.
Yea, most people have no clue what it is. In college, my roommate's criminology textbook had a demographic rendering on it and I'm like lol, I'm making maps just like that in my GIS class.

Yeah, coyotes!
On a random note: do you pronounce it co-yote or co-yo-tee?

Blitz32 In reply to Talonzi [2014-01-21 01:02:32 +0000 UTC]
phonetically I pronounce it 'kye-oat' or something to that affect haha Some people here call them 'key-oh-tee's though haha

Talonzi In reply to Blitz32 [2014-01-21 01:26:24 +0000 UTC]
That is what I meant to spell out. How do phonetics? Anyhoot, I used to say key-oh-tee but now I say kye-oat a lot. I have been converted!

Blitz32 In reply to Talonzi [2014-01-21 02:08:52 +0000 UTC]
I always knew them as 'kye-oats'Β I hear a lot of people say 'kye-oat-ee' as well ahah I think the best take on coyote names though was from a guy in one of my college classes from Arkansas, he called them 'ditch-cooters' hahahaha
