Personally, I do think he has that soft spot, but it's buried beneath his culturally enforced self-perceptions of superiority and the 'necessary' level violence befitting his caste, and misguided feelings of entitlement. There are trolls that he genuinely cares about, but he is as much a product of troll society as Equius, but for different reasons. While Equius regards it as this set of rules by which he should live his life, even when it does not benefit him, Eridan uses it as a grounds to bolster his own low self-worth and a way to reap all of the benefits of status that he possibly can.

The gist of what I'm trying to say is that Eridan is a total douche, and he's not really sorry about it, but he has the potential not to be.

I agree, however, I also sorta see much of his sourness coming from the fact that in-turn, no matter what he does, no one holds any respect for him or gives him a chance. Save for maybe Equius, however, that's likely because Eq has it drilled into his head that he'll be punished if he acts otherwise.

Heheh. And even Equius thinks he's kind of gross, and doesn't *want* to treat him with respect.
That's a good point, and I feel like that ties into his entitlement thing. He thinks that he deserves their respect, whether or not he actually earns it.
I really wish he hadn't been Feferi's moirail, because he wasn't the only one who did a bad job of it. She was just as poorly suited to handling him as he was to her, and once she didn't need him to feed her lusus anymore, she dropped him so fast he might as well have been on fire, at a time when he still needed emotional support.
