actually i have a few questions.igotonmerelytoaskyou. I'm trying to get into drawing realism and I'm curious as to how you go about it. Do you have any tips?
I hate charcoal because i can never get it to look...right. its always scratchy and lame I do draw somewhat realistically as is but I'm trying to push myself further.~

I actually have a pretty odd way of doing it, I learned it from my art teacher. Mainly my charcoal drawings are just practice for quality control, but they still look pretty. : )
Anyway, I'll grab a picture I like and print it out and cut it lengthwise into 1/2" strips. Then I'll do each at a time and blend the edges seamlessly together when I start on the next strip. Kind of confusing, but that way I'm not working with this huge image and have no clue where to begin.

I use charcoal pencils, which are different than regular old charcoal and have a LOT more control. xD The WIP of that hawk is here: [link] You can see it numbered at the top~ That's where each numbered strip will fit in.

Then I just fill it in slowly from left to right (right to left if you're a leftie). I don't use my fingers to blend, but instead the tips of the pencils (you /can/ you your fingers, just a lot more messy and the oils on your hands will make the charcoal clay-like.) I don't erase either, but instead fill over whatever mistakes I've made. Charcoal is forgiving like that. : )

The trick is to fill in the paper completely, and not leave any showing through. I wonder if I could find someone on Youtube that does something similar to what I do. xD

OH ANOTHER THING THAT I FORGOT AND THAT IS KIND OF IMPORTANT.
I use black and white charcoal pencils and then blend with varying levels of one or the other to make different shades of gray.

It's also important to have heavier paper, 'cause otherwise the pencil might start tearing it up.

General's brand of charcoal pencils are some of the best, they are available at like most craft stores and stuff, as well as online.

i still cannot get charcoal to look right! haha I used your advice, but with pencil and its looking pretty nice right now. thank you sooo much fff.
i will have to look for better charcoal and paper so it doesnt rip it up because thats my main problem right now :c

lolyeah. charcoal is so hard on paper, it tears it to shreds if it's not thick/strong enough.
