mv /usr/src
ls -l
tar -xzvf /path/to/the/kernel-2.6.10.tar.gz
cd /path/to/the/kernel-2.6.10
make dep; make clean
makemodules; make modules_install

and theres other module configs if you feel like it, then afterwards its just a question of editing bootloader script likes so:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10
label=linuxnew
read-only
root=/dev/hda1

^^ and you're done.
