Send one to all your friends who you think deserve a hug (which, hopefully includes the person who sent it to you)!!
You might send it to your enemies as well!
It'll really make them stop and think!!!
If you don't receive this back, nobody likes you, and they wish you'd stop bugging them!
If you receive this back 1 time, open up! Find more friends, enemies, or enemies pretending to be friends
If you receive this back 2 times, you're off to a good start! (Unless you sent it to yourself! That's cheating!)
If you receive this back 3 times, you're a good friend.
If you receive this back 4 times, you're truly loved as a friend!!

Well, I'm a watcher of a friend of yours, Baron-engel, and I am a big fan of rpg's. so, when he referenced your work in one of his submissions I decided to check it out and see for myself. I enjoy the Pony Tales game, but I do believe that some example sessions and minor pre-generated adventures would be nice to see for those who are not-so-familiar with the d6 system.
I, simply put, have no idea how to be the GM for this game since I have very little experience as a d6 GM

Funny you should say that. A back-burner project that’s under way currently is a “resource booklet” that will contain a grab-bag of characters and “story-seeds”, or basic story ideas, along with an example game setting.
Example sessions are much more difficult to write up (and much more boring to read, to be honest). However, one of Baron’s and my roommates, who also participates in my “pilot” game of Pony Tales, has posted some summaries of game sessions.

I would absolutely love to do thought-provoking and exploration encounters, the only problem for me is the fact that my little brother who plays RPGs with me gets irate and bored when there is little to no bloodshed... and since I'm quite unfamiliar with combat in the d6 system I've only begun to understand spells and the basic gist of melee combat.
I can't wait to see this "Grab bag" resource booklet and eagerly look forward to understanding the game a bit more.

Heh. One hopes he eventually will grow out of that. For obvious reasons, while there are complete rules for combat, Pony Tales is set up to de-emphasize it.
Also, the way I’ve set up unicorn spell magic is completely different from the way stock Open D6 handles spells. Partly that’s because I’ve always felt magic systems are whole extra sets of mechanics just kind of bolted on, and partly it’s to hew more closely to the feel of the series.
If you haven’t downloaded it already, grab the “quick reference” document and look it over. It distills a lot of information down to simple tables, which may help in grasping the rules, along with reading and pondering the rules themselves.

I am willing to respond to specific questions or comments, but I’m afraid I can’t commit to anything more extensive. I’ve posted some entries on my journal, along with a few gallery items, specifically to address certain creative challenges, including the type at hand (hoof?). You may want to look over my gallery on world-building and at part three of the Pony Tales rulebook; in the latest version of the latter I’ve added some sample “story-seeds” or ideas.

well, the place where I want my story to at least start at is a town to the west of Ponyville called Stonybrook. my first idea for an adventure is that the local mine has been closed due to the rumors of a monster living in the mines and causing random cave-ins. The monster is actually a baby dragon who's just trying to find his way out of the mines. A group of "brave" miners go into the mines but after the sounds of another cave collapse most of the town assumes the monster got them. one of the characters has an adopted daughter who ends up deciding that this cave monster would be a good "learning experience"

That sounds like a perfectly serviceable story idea! I say go for it.
Hmm. I already talk about the question of “literal” versus “figurative” game, but it occurs to me that I should try to find room for another question: serial versus episodic game.
According to Ms. Faust, she originally proposed a completely serial storyline, but Hasbro wouldn’t budge on that issue and demanded a completely episodic program. I can understand Hasbro’s point, but I think they’re still wedded to a programming model that’s increasingly outdated.

Through my experience of being a D&D Dungeon Master (DM) I have the book that is a reference guide for the system. It spends a good-sized chapter explaining purely on how to make adventures, how to set up adventures and even how to set up dungeons and random encounters.
it goes on about the styles of play; Kick-in-the-door vs. In-depth and how most DMs are somewhere in between... setting up adventure hooks; Episodic vs. continuing and how to weave both into a storyline. I've grown up s long with the d20 system that if I [w]ould actually sit down and set it up I could make something like pony tales for D&D.

The latest version of the Pony Tales rulebook spends a page or so on storytelling, and there are hints and suggestions scattered throughout. I may eventually add more material on the subject, but the amount of work I already have put into the game is pretty considerable. The idea of squeezing out still more text is a little daunting, to tell the truth. . . .

well, it seems to be a constantly evolving game... and with games like that, you always think of something new to handle... like if someone's block talent would be able to be used to block nearby allies from getting hit or if it counts in the same way dodge would and only affects the character who has ranks in that talent. It is understandable that you have put a lot of effort into the creation of this magnificent game, you know the old saying "you reap what you sow" ... it affects good stuff as well as bad stuff.

CatspawDTP In reply to ZephyrTheDragonlord [2013-05-24 01:29:29 +0000 UTC]
To address your specific example, I’m sure Block, like every other defense option, applies only to the character using it. Truth to tell, no other interpretation occurred to me, and I’m not sure it occurred to the Open D6 folks either. I may insert a general statement into the defense rules to clear it up, though.

ZephyrTheDragonlord In reply to CatspawDTP [2013-05-24 12:18:28 +0000 UTC]
it was actually my little brother who brought that one to my attention because he thought of the character Auron from FFX. I began working with my little brother on the range an ally would have to have... and found out that if you're blocking an adjacent ally from getting hit by a griffon's claw attack and your block is successful... the griffon deals no damage to either character.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatspawDTP In reply to ZephyrTheDragonlord [2013-05-25 00:21:29 +0000 UTC]
I’ll have to ponder whether to allow blocking on behalf of another; my gut feeling is to say no, it isn’t allowed. If I change my mind, I’d have to work up a rule to fit, and it definitely would be an optional rule, not part of the basic rules. For a game that emphasizes simplicity and de-emphasizes combat, it simply would add too much hassle to be worthwhile except for high-end games.
The griffin theoretically could injure the blocking character, if the latter is unarmed and unarmored. Granted, if the Block is successful, it would be pretty unlikely, since only the 1d talon injury value would be rolled, without the Strength Bonus. If the Block fails, though, the Strength Bonus would be added, making injury more likely.

right, on an unrelated note, I have a character in my story... a unicorn... that has set her goal in life to be to prove that unicorns can in fact learn any spell... just that it is much harder if the spell isn't related to a unicorn's specialty.
obviously you don't have to work that into the rules, it could be a homebrew bit of "flavoring" but I thought it would be quite interesting. To me the unicorns seem like specialist wizards or REALLY focused sorcerers, and that twilight would be a wizard character that didn't specialize at the beginning.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatspawDTP In reply to ZephyrTheDragonlord [2013-05-26 23:27:06 +0000 UTC]
It’s an interesting idea, though as a reader (or writer) I’d be inclined to assume after centuries or even millennia of methodical research the unicorns would have covered every possible angle pretty thoroughly.
That certainly would fit with game and story balance as well—otherwise unicorns would be all-purpose power tools and far more powerful than the other tribes. I suspect that would remain true even if one, say, required a unicorn character to spend more creation or experience points on a spell outside the unicorn’s Magical Style (or the equivalent in a different rules set).
To put it more simply, I think the specializing is part of what balances unicorn magical power against that of the other two tribes.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ZephyrTheDragonlord In reply to CatspawDTP [2013-05-27 00:54:29 +0000 UTC]
well... obviously twilight isn't the first unicorn to learn more than one type of spell, assuming that the entire wing of the Starswirl the Bearded section of the canterlot library is a collection of all the spells he could do... or at least that's what I've been led to believe, supposedly his special talent wasn't magic itself as well. If this comes off as condescending or rude I truly do not mean to sound that way... as I read back through it kinda sounds to me to be that way... anyway... of course it is specialization that would balance them. twilight doesn't seem to be as good at those many kinds of magic as specialists would be, she would be jack of all trades, master of none. I kinda lost my train of thought there and forgot where I was going with this
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatspawDTP In reply to ZephyrTheDragonlord [2013-05-27 18:30:20 +0000 UTC]
It’s true we don’t know much about Starswirl the Bearded. For that matter, the writers don’t tend to be consistent about their treatment of magic, which complicates matters considerably from a world-building point of view. It was that sort of potential or actual discrepancy that led me to include a statement in the rulebook differentiating between the rather loose treatment the show gives the subject versus a game’s need for stricter consistency.
Twilight’s (initial) lack of control, differentiated from her considerable raw power, was one factor that led to the recent revision splitting the Magic Aptitude into Finesse and Power.
