The easiest way would be to have MoGraph and then you can just make one link and duplicate it along a spline. I think there are a couple of free plugins out there that do that for you too, but otherwise you can just add an 'Align to Spline' tag to your object to get it to snap to a spline, and then copy the object and change the position value in the tag, and do that as many times as are necessary.

Do you have the Hair module installed? If so, just select a few polys of the object and go to the hair menu and click add hair. That will add a hair thingie to an environment map and it'll create a hair material for you. You can then delete the hair material and click the hair tag to reassign the grass material instead of the one you deleted. It isn't easy to describe but just look around and you'll find it.

If you haven't got the Hair module then you're screwed and wont be able to use it tho.

In fact, it is. I haven't booted back into Tiger more than once since putting Leopard on here tho, so it's gone from the profile now. I'm kinda careful when it comes to OS upgrades and updates and prefer to keep a backup of an entire system just incase.

I was going to do that, but I'd rather have XP/Leopard than another version of OSX. I trust Apple not to screw with the upgrading process.
