Hey, thanks. I tend to disappear for a bit, come back etc. or just get lazy at responding to things. haha. i've been well. i'm currently in the application for my local police department. I applied once in July, got turned down due to "lack of speaking up", tried again and now i'm in the background investigation phase. I'm still about 2 months off from hearing anything. Academy starts Aug. 12th if i get in. I'm not entirely thrilled about being an officer, but at this time and age, i just need a decent career, and then move on to something new after some time.

Aside from that, I purchased a new camera (Nikon d50, with a new Macro 60mm prime lens).. umm, working out (took some time off and got out of shape again, haha).. and still doing work for the travel agency. I just recently saw my host family I haven't seen for about 6 years, and got some rice from their farm. :3

Other than that, life is pretty decent. Can't believe I'll be 26 in October this year, still living at home, no gf, and no real career. oh, and sold a few shirts to my friend's in Japan. (the shirt business is a little on hold until i get a full idea of how/where i want to go with it). but yea, how have you been?

Boy... I didn't think you's still remember me!
You've been away for so long, I was really curious about what had happened to you.

I am glad to hear that you're doing well, though. All that new photography gadget sounds cool, too. And I want to wish you all the best of luck with your application. It's getting harder and harder to apply to a job that has regular pension nowadays, I am afraid. With the economic downturn folks are scrambling to search for jobs with some kind of security (and being a policeman would certainly be counted as such). So... all the best of luck!

You know... between you and I... this economic downturn may or may not have played in your favour.
Folks nowadays won't have enough "float" cash in their pockets that they can spend on just things they like. They are much more likely to really pinch their pennies and get only what they need. It means fewer and fewer people will be willing to shell out $30 for a tee, even if they really like the pattern. On that front, business will surely suffer. But I think your original business plan was running on a lot of steam but not enough coal. And perhaps this downturn is just the right opportunity for you to build up something more substantial. I say, take the opportunity while you have it.

Me? Same old, same old. Going to work early in the morning and stay there for a 10, 12 hours or so. Working as a resident doctor in the local hospital now. Things have gotten a little more hectic and a little busier. But I still like the job and I like the people I work with (well, most of them at least). So... I'm learning to just take it day by day.

cranemann33 In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2013-04-03 06:34:33 +0000 UTC]

well, of course i'll never forget you. See, I tend to know a lot of people.. but there are few I really trust or deem close to me. Even though we don't know each other face to face, I'd still like to believe that I can trust you rather well. So yea, I won't forget you, and you'll always be somewhere in my head.. even if I take a long absence from DA.

The policeman thing keeps dawning on me everyday. I noticed that I'm not going to the gym as much, nor the PTs offered at the academy. I'm starting to slack off more, and I think my parents are noticing my lack of initiative on the subject matter. It would be great stability, but due to the long process, I'm really evaluating if its the right thing for me. So, I might actually attempt to get a job at a decent company, and hey.. maybe then I'll opt out of the officer thing. Its best not to invest everything in this, because if I don't get selected, I've just spent 6-8 months doing nothing.

This weekend I'm actually going to Cali from the 6th to the 11th to visit my sister. We discussed that it will be not only to go back to cali (since its been ages since i've been back out), but a trip mainly focused on photography. So much so, that I just dropped about 1500 on new lens'. xD I bought a 10-24mm wide angle lens, and a 55-300mm VR lens. I currently have a 70-300mm lens.. but it doesn't spin on my new camera, and i really just wanted something newer. Had to invest in a new bag, filters, and a cleaning kit as well. hmm.. maybe i should get another tripod.. or .. hmm..

My friend has already told me, she's giving me 2 years to become a pro photographer.. so I can do her wedding. lol So, that and the fact that It would be cool to get paid to do my hobbies.. is a nice incentive. Its fun to take photos, but I gotta find a place to put them. So, with this, maybe I'll finally start making that website. then incorporate the shirts into that as a bonus.

Not sure If I ever asked, but what type of a doctor do you want to be/trying to be? I actually have to go see a back doctor when I get back from my trip. I have kyphosis but was never given that definiate answer of "no, you don't need surgery". My back to the most part is fine.. just, normal back is a 40% curve, and mine is still at 60%. Doesn't really hurt these days since I go to the gym.. but.. the sit-ups.. those bother my back. since my spine pops out a bit. ><"

btw, if you get a chance.. let me know what you think of the new photos I put up.

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to cranemann33 [2013-04-03 20:57:40 +0000 UTC]

I am training to be a general surgeon. Kyphosis is the domain of spinal and/or orthopaedic surgeons. But I can certainly tell you about a bit more about your condition. At the present moment, you do not qualify for a surgery for multiple reasons. Spinal surgeries do not really "fix" anything. The procedure itself implants rods alongside your spine in order to fuse the "bent" segments to a better alignment. [link] The goal to such a surgery is to completely -stop- movement in those joints so that they will not cause pain. Basically, it's not something to fix your posture; it's a procedure to stop intractable pain and possibly align physical deformity. If you think doing sit-ups bother your back... after surgery you'll no longer be able to do sit-ups, at all. It also means that if you are still somewhat entertaining the thought of becoming a policeman, having a spinal surgery will land you at a desk job and no chance of active duty... if they let you in at all.

One thing I am sensing in your statements is that you are not ready to "settle down", yet. I have a feeling that you still want to use your talents and your "hobbies" to make a name for yourself. You are willing to put down $1500 for a new lens with money which you don't have in order to indulge in the idea that you might turn pro within 2 years. How to pay off the $1500 and what to do during these two years' time didn't seem to bother you much at all. I am not one to crush anyone's dreams, but I am a realist, after all. I want to make sure your dreams and your talents match and your goals are within attainable reach. From what I am seeing here... I need to point a few things out to you.

There are multiple kinds of "pro photographers". Those who do wedding photos aren't the people who do photojournalism and drastically different from those who do scenery or ads. At the present moment, your new works show that you have an affinity for staging scenes without people. That's not going to make you into a wedding photographer, I am afraid. In order to turn "pro", you need to make a name for yourself in the right arena. If weddings are what you have in mind, then you will need to look into how to take "natural" portrait works of a single person, a large number of people, adults and kids, young and old, male and female. That kind of work is completely absent in your portfolio on-line. It's food for thought from Mr. Realist here. If scenery is your hobby, then you need to look into job opportunities in this area instead. There's no time line of anyone turning "pro" because you need to consistently take enough of different photographs in order to sell them.

I am honoured to know that you have decided that you can trust me with your hopes and dreams. It's my hope that one day I can completely support you in your decisions. At this present moment - as much as I hate to tell you this right now - you are walking down a path similar to your shirt company: too much hot air and not enough coal. It seems that you are taking in only the voices that support your own preconceived ideals but not the warning signs. In here I hope to provide you with some of them in a palatable fashion so you might take some time to entertain them.

So, how's business?

cranemann33 In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2011-09-03 05:56:40 +0000 UTC]

Business is going decent. I've sold a few shirts here and there, and got a shop in La's Little Tokyo. So, I call that progress for less than a month of a company launch. There is still so much more I have yet to figure out, but I'd rather be in the middle of it all then on the sidelines.

By the way sir, do you happen to have a facebook account?

I'm very glad to hear that, my friend.

If nothing else, it is I who should thank you for your support and your attention. Art, like beauty, lies in the eyes of the beholder. Without you, I don't amount to much. Without the appreciation and support of you and people like you, I don't think I would have lasted so long on deviantArt. So, if the photographs had done something for you, the pleasure and the honour are both mine.
