yeah, the file manager mockup is really amazing, espeacially the navigation bar at the bottom and the right. did you think about joinig the marlin developing team? i guess they're pretty open for new designs and

I'd like to, but I think my mockup is way too "radical" for them and I mean it by radical that in all this time marlin or pantheon file has been live the design of it hasn't changed very much.

hm, i guess i oversaw the pathbar, which looks very slick btw. still i like your interface a lot, because after some time all filemanagers are built up after the same scheme, with the navigation tree on the right, the pathbar on top and so on. therefore i think you should really make it more public, and try to win ~danrabbit, or the nautilus dev team for you, and get a new taste in the world of filemanagers. i'd gladly support you wherever i can, but my coding abilitys are limited to some python basics. ^^

Thanks , I'd discard the Gnome developers completely they're know not to listen to anyone but them, I'd go with Dan but I believe that they now have the foundations for what they want they have their own guidelines and stuff, It would be quite hard to make them change them to fit something like this as they have build up their environment following them, that's why i prefer for now having those as concepts and when the time comes bring them to reality so that i follow my guidelines

ok, if i ever find the time to expand my python knowledge maybe even learn c++ and the take a look at the gtk framework, this filemanager will definitely be one of my first projects, and i'll let you know when i'm going to start it. ^^

thats true, but it doesnt mean that you can't change it to any better if you work on it a little bit. for example, the 'create new folder' doesnt need to be that big an on the top, i'd suggest you put the 'directory up' arrow there.

or i think it would fit very much for a touch interface such as a tablet, because its not overloaded with a lot of stuff, and it looks like you could copy&paste just by dragging the items into the icon, and if you want to look whats in your pastebin, just click on it, or to print just drag whatever you want to the printer icon. that would be really intuitive and stuff ^^

Of course, well that's not a create new folder icon, it's a create new file icon that's why it's in a disabled state(light gray), also I see the directory up action as a redundancy in file managers, because it does the same action as pressing back, let's say you're in home>documents>folder x, directory up would take you to Documents, which is the same as pressing back.

Another scenario is that you're in folder x and directory up takes you to the root folder of folder x's path, that would be home, now I've added a home button effectively making directory up redundant.

In the case that home is not the root of folder x but / is, there's a pathbar which tells you the complete folder structure, so just moving the cursor and clicking on the / folder would do the same as using directory up.

It is as you say fit for touch interfaces I love Android and the available file managers did inspire this , of course I prefer to use a mouse.

I would still use the classic gesture of making a selection with the mouse by dragging the cursor and then pressing the desired action, in a touch interface it would be the same, making a multi touch gesture selecting the items and then pressing the desired action, or it could also be as you say. I would work either way.
