insidiate β to lie in ambush (for); to plot (against)
A very rare word but, in my judgment, a very useful one. OED lists it as "obsolete," but that's bollocks!

Metathesis -
1. Linguistics Transposition within a word of letters, sounds, or syllables, as in the change from Old English brid to modern English bird or in the confusion of modren for modern.
[Late Latin, from Greek, from metatithenai, to transpose : meta-, meta- + tithenai, to place; see dhΔ- in Indo-European roots.]
met'aΒ·thet'ic (mΔt'Ι-thΔt'Δk), met'aΒ·thet'iΒ·cal adj., met'aΒ·thet'iΒ·calΒ·ly adv.
I attribute this to Aphex Twin's 'Flim', which caused me to see 'film', and the search began.

Even I wasn't ready for this sort of wicked.
Etymology's...etymology. Where do I get these fantabulous idΓ©es?
Origin in 1398, from Gk. etymologia, from etymon "true sense" (neut. of etymos "true," related to eteos "true") + logos "word." In classical times, of meanings; later, of histories. Latinized by Cicero as veriloquium.

auΒ·bade
1. A song or instrumental composition concerning, accompanying, or evoking daybreak.
2. A poem or song of or about lovers separating at dawn.
[French, from Old French albade, from Old Provençal albada, from alba, dawn, aubade, from Latin, feminine of albus, white; see albho- in Indo-European roots.]

1. Merely imaginary; produced by or as if by a wildly fanciful imagination; fantastic; improbable or unrealistic.
2. Given to or indulging in unrealistic fantasies or fantastic schemes.
Now this is fun. It's rare I come upon a word I can't figure out by root, prefix, or suffix. This is no different.
Truly, it's a gift to give yourself. Grab a tome from the library full of roots. Dissect the difficult!

I'm not sure when you'd use this, but it tastes so good on the tongue. Interrregggnuhmmm... Yum.
Oh, and I'd use the secondary option for pluralization. Ghnhumns? No. -Gna? Yea.
interregnum \in-tuhr-REG-nuhm\, noun;
plural interregnums \-nuhmz\ or interregna \-nuh\:
1. The interval between two reigns; any period when a state is left without a ruler.
2. A period of freedom from authority or during which government functions are suspended.
3. Any breach of continuity in an order; a lapse or interval in a continuity.

1. A fine point of exactness in conduct, ceremony, or procedure.
2. Strictness or exactness in the observance of formalities; as, "the punctilios of a public ceremony."

Le rugissement du fΓ©lin Γ©voque le bruit de l'allumette contre le grattoir, tout comme les rayures de son magnifique pelage rappellent des flammes qui dansent. The big cat's yawning snarl evokes the spitting sound of a struck match, just as the colors of its fiery coat suggest dancing flames.

Yum!
I bringing back and rediscovering unused words. Renaissance!
chirography β handwriting; penmanship
[The word, once reasonably common, dropped out of use in the first few decades of the 20th century.]
My grandfather's chirography was horrid. It usually looked as if a spider that dropped into a bottle of ink was permitted to crawl over the paper. He himself could not read it half the time β¦

This week's theme of "graphic language' is not what you may think. One meaning of graphic is 'describing nudity or sexual activity in detail.' But we will instead be looking at some obscure words from the Greek root graphe writing.
tachygraphy β shorthand; the art of rapid writing
[Sometimes refers to a particular sytem devised by Thomas Shelton in 1641.]
[Greek tachy- swift]
Definitely shortand. Not the most recent kind either, and older version. This is tachygraphy of the type that Samuel Pepys used in his diaries. Before the 19th century it was popular among lawyers and naval officers. Hopelessly arcane now, of course.

A festive word, friends:
wassail \WAH-sul; wah-SAYL\, noun:
1. An expression of good wishes on a festive occasion, especially in drinking to someone.
2. An occasion on which such good wishes are expressed in drinking; a drinking bout; a carouse.
3. The liquor used for a wassail; especially, a beverage formerly much used in England at Christmas and other festivals, made of ale (or wine) flavored with spices, sugar, toast, roasted apples, etc.
Thank you, blessèd dictionary!
