I wholeheartedly agree with you! (although, to be honest, I didn't like the movie they made about him. Here's my review of it if you're interested)
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) ReviewWell, the long-awaited movie about Queen is finally here. And let’s just say...it was less than I had anticipated. Without much further ado, I give you my honest, unadulterated, unfiltered, and uncensored review.
WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Positives:
- The Music: Obviously the music. ‘Nuff said.
- Opening TCF logo: I thought it was cool how they redubbed the 20th Century Fox theme with Brian’s guitar and Roger’s drums.
- Cats: I like how they incorporated all the cats.
Negatives:
- Historical Inaccuracy: The timeline was just all over the place. There were so many inaccuracies. Come on. This isn’t Pocahontas. Many events happened too early, others happened too late. There were just so many things they got wrong in this movie, it’s hard to point them all out. For example, Freddie actually met Jim Hutton in a bar, a little while before Live Aid, not at his house party in 1980! He was a hairdresser, not a butler. Also, We Will Rock

Yeah, all the right exposure...but for all the wrong reasons.
Besides, it's gonna be a lot of people's first exposure to Queen. And as someone who's been a fan since about 2016 or so, I want them to know the truth. Basically, they'd be coming out of the theater misinformed. A lie is one thing, but a lie that's being presented as the truth...that's even worse.
What makes it more frustrating is that two of the original bandmates (Brian May and Roger Taylor) were creative consultants. Surely if anybody would have known how those events went down, THEY would! They LIVED them!
Now, granted, I know it's not a documentary. It doesn't have to be a documentary. But a movie can be historically accurate while still being a good movie. Look at Gettysburg, 12 Years a Slave, Goodfellas, Apollo 13, and more. Besides, sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction, especially in the case of Freddie Mercury, who led a pretty interesting life for a rockstar, if you think about it.
Name me one other (mainstream) rock singer who was born on a distant spice island off the coast of Africa, went to boarding school thousands of miles away in India, then fled his homeland because of a political uprising, came to England, helped form a band, wrote dozens of chart-topping hits, and ultimately, became one of the most revered icons of twentieth-century music. I know you can't cram all this stuff in two hours, but still. This stuff alone is enough to make, like, three movies. Maybe a miniseries on Netflix.
Anyway, my point is that there was so much potential that was wasted with this movie. It could have been a really good movie. It really could have.

I agree, the reasons are wrong, at least we have the exposure. Do not worry. I understand you. I have been a huge fan since I heard I Kind Of Magic for the first time in 1986. And I had the chance to buy I Kind of Magic, the Miracle and Innuendo while Freddie was still alive and this LP appeared. Of course I have many other LP by them. I remember how I´d like to see Freddi with Montserrat Caballé singing Barcelona in the open of the Olympic games in 1992. Unfortunately he died in 1991. In my classes sometimes I have told these things to my students. I have used some of their songs and videos like Radio Ga Ga, I want to break free or Innuendo for some subjects. These are only a few examples I am well aware that Queen , and even Freddie and the others members of the band have many more lps together and by themselves. In any case, I am with you 100%. I think, the reason is that Queen is such a brilliant and unique band that it is almost impossible to take advantage of its full potential. I don´t understand what happened with Brian May and Roger Taylor, if they gave their approval, then we can´t blame the producers and the screenwritters of the move for all, can we?? And I can´t name any other one. Freddie was really unique.

I mean, with Brian and Roger present, they literally had no good reason to be doing what they did with the story.
And yet, somehow, this movie won a Golden Globe. Why?
I’ll tell you why. Because...well, let’s face it. People are all suckers when it comes to this stuff. Everything about this movie just screams “BUY OUR FUCKING SONGS!” That’s just it! It’s not a movie, it’s a commercial! A two-hour long commercial! I mean, come on! You don’t need a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster to tell you how good Queen’s music is.
Anyway, about the casting. Now let me make it clear that I have nothing against Rami Malek as an actor or as a human being. I just think he was the wrong choice in my opinion (at least in terms of looks). He’s not god-awful, just miscast (you can tell he’s definitely trying, and for that, kudos to him). If you look real close at a picture of him and the real Freddie side-by-side, the differences become quite obvious. This probably would’ve been passable if this were some sort of Lifetime movie, but this is a big-screen movie. You’d think that surely they’d have higher standards in casting. Seriously! I don’t know why, I just can’t get over it! I just can’t! Whenever he’s in costume, he just looks ugly. Like an anorexic version of Freddie Mercury with blue bug eyes. It’s just so distracting (for me, anyway).
Am I shallow for focusing too much small little details such as appearance?

I think you have a point of course. Queen doesn´t need to do commercials about their music. But let´s face it, there are new generations now who do not know or barely know what Queen was.
I still haven´t seen the movie. So I can´t give my opinion. It is not about small details. I think you know very well the history of the band so You know very well what you are saying. But what can we do?.
Maybe people and critics are giving the award and celebrating more Queen itself than the movie.

Me neither. (I like girls (and I mean ACTUAL girls)) And yes, whether you're attracted to trannies or not, you can't deny that she actually passes very well as a cis woman, so much so that you probably wouldn't even tell that she was trans unless she told you.
