I'm using a "program" called LSDJ. It's an actual game cartridge that you buy online then you create the music right on your gameboy. It's a tracking music program, so its different than other types of audio programs.

However, you can easily recreate chiptune sounds using various plug-ins in audio programs

Oh, on that website you can also buy LSDJ for $2 then just run it on an emulator on your computer before buying the actual cartridge.

Yeah, I think that's what really got me to start creating chiptune music. Just the fact that it's on an old 8-bit portable video game system! If you ever think about beginning some of your own, I say definitely go for it. It's so much fun!!
