So, how'd you like Annecy?

evomc In reply to KillAllMonsters [2009-06-18 04:54:01 +0000 UTC]

Heya Mr Bogelund! Annecy was aces, was gonna fire you off one of those email things this weekend telling you how awesome your film turned out, really strong visual story telling and the voice casting worked out great! The Annecy people never got back to you about your accreditation (or if they did too late)? Pity you couldn't be there for it, maybe next year and then you get dragged back into the animation world!

KillAllMonsters In reply to evomc [2009-06-18 07:41:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, yeah! I was there! I got my accreditation some days before the festival started, and everything worked out! It was an AWESOME festival! I'm all fired up now and ready to start work on my next film!

I'm glad to hear you liked my movie! Thanks mate!

What films did the biggest impression on you? I have to go with the flow and say I propably was most stoked about "Plase say something", "Chick" and "Crying out for nature, or against it". I also really enjoyed "Genious party beyond" and the french graduation film "Gary".
Unfortunately I never got to see "Max and Mary" or "My dog Tulip". I mostly went to the shortfilm programs.

Ah man, we shoulda done lunch! If only I hadn't been too fried from screenings to fire an internet message to you
The only minor crit I have about yer film is that sometimes the compositing artifacts and textures are a bit distracting, otherwise: sweet! You're making another film yes? Wheeeee!
Dave O'Reilly's pretty hot these days alright, he's come along way since dropping out of my class in first year (or maybe levitating above is more like it?).
Did you see Rains, the NFB short? [link] beautiful little atmospheric piece. "According to Birds" by Linde Fass was pretty sweet too. "I live in the woods" "Touchdown of the Dead" "Cahinsaw MAid" and "The Tale Of Little Puppetboy" were really funny. The Inuity films "Inukshuk" (EPIC) and "J'Faim" (FUN) were really great. "Rendez-vous mit einer Toten" by Pauline Flory I thought was emotionally sophisticated and well executed. "Zachte Planten" by Emma De Swaef is worth mentioning too for the felting and an naked man riding a sheep like a horse.
I saw Genius Party Beyond on one of the last days, and I fell asleep far too much in it to really formulate a memory but I really liked Wan-wa. I really have to sit down with the huge L'Officiel book and write down the ones I liked, I have such a mess of films swimming around in my memory that I can't tell one from another.
YOu check out any comics? Got to meet up with Bastien Vives while I was over there, one of my heroes: LeGhout du Chlore is remarkly good.
Gotta go get a bus to the west of Ireland now. I'll swap some more notes when i get back!

How's college treating you and life in the city?

Hello

College it's okay, I think, whatever I have a bit difficulty in some classes but... move on

Lisbon still the same Lisbon, makes me feel good in any time, but lonely too.

Well, I need vacations xD

evomc In reply to RubyBaggins [2009-01-24 22:52:46 +0000 UTC]

That's a pity, I remember when I was in college (all those years ago) everyday felt like I was banging my head against a wall, struggling to articulate myself through my work and essays. Every once and a while though I'd almost get it right, and that little taste of success was enough to get me through the next few months of trying to put my head through a wall.
What kind of classes are you attending?
Vacation! Another thing to keep you going. The last year I've been all over the place, but this year looks like a quiet one... though I may be able to sneak off to an animation festival or two on the sly.

I am a complicated human being, whose wants are often in direct conflict with my means. It would be nice to draw a lovely picture but I just can't, my hands won't let me. I do like drawings that say one thing but communicate something completely different. It's like stripping down a false façade and seeing a fellow on the toilet through the fake-dry wall

evomc In reply to yakkingyetis [2008-06-26 02:46:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm technically an animator/filmmaker, but that tends to involve an awful lot of deisgning and drawing so in a way I guess I do draw for a living. It makes me seem alive in any case. What particular application of drawing are you pursuing?

I'd definitely suggest a solid education in art, college or courses or otherwise, there's such a range of approaches that it can be quite overwhelming when approaching it on your own. Also more formal critiques are a must, as good as DA is, it can tend to glaze over mistakes or poor work, and I can be hard to learn from your mistakes if you're not aware of them

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

yakkingyetis In reply to evomc [2008-06-26 15:40:42 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

evomc In reply to yakkingyetis [2008-06-27 01:16:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah don't say that, we must constantly study and learn to grow as an artist. Otherwise we shrivel up and die, like a zeppelin with no highly explosive preasurised gas. It's just a short film, I'm only just out of college myself

i kinda find it hard to watch too much anime, it's all so terribly homogenous. There are of course the breakaways like Kaiba and some of the old world theatre stuff, but more often than not it kind of bores me. If there's any ya can recommend do fill me in, cause there's just too much to pick from arbitrarily

Ah the old Shinichiro Watanabe's stuff is pretty cool alright. Dennou Coil isn't bad either, expecially the episodes not concerned with pushing the main story arc, which kind of rushes itself at the end. Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent is kind of interesting for the same reason, the fact that it takes snippets of different places and characters in almost every episode builds up the feeling of the world, though it kinda falls on its dace at the end, as with most of Kon's stuff. Akage no Ann (Anne of Green Gables) is an old toei doga series which is very delicately directed, quite involving and well observed characters, and of course Future Boy Conan is pure unadulterated Hayao Miyazaki goodness. A recent series Kemonozume wsa kind of interesting, visually as weel as story wise, but soon the dreaded porduction deadlines started to take their toll on its story and writing

There is a lot of stuff out there in the Anime world and it's very easy to get lost in Bleach or Naruto or so (now these may be good series, I just haven't given them any time, preferring instead to find shows more in tune with my sensibilities) but extended research and pooling of resources ([link] is especially good for more news of the more experimental productions) has provided a plethora of great shows to get through.... if only they were actually available

Hello! You're black biro pieces are really cool. Love that "fields-on-a-hill" look you gave the hairdos in "the hair?" There's something intrinsically pleasing about lines moving in parallel with each other; it's almost like a dance. When I was little I used to get as many different coloured pens and markers as I could find and try drawing with them all at once. It's kind of mesmerising, like a spirograph or fractal painting. I've had too many sweets at the cinema and am now a bit hyper, with all the rambling. Do make more, i'm gonna try and track down some drawing utensils, how many? All of them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

twentywaystosee In reply to evomc [2008-06-27 11:34:45 +0000 UTC]

Hello! : ) Thanks alot for your long comment and the nice things you say. I did that too when I was little. I should try that again, and see how it turns out. And rambling is okay, it's better than saying nothing at all. What movie did you see? I recently went to see indiana jones 4. It was strange but entertaining though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

evomc In reply to twentywaystosee [2008-06-27 11:50:23 +0000 UTC]

NOOOOOOOOO not INdy 4!!! that film I thought was terribly bad, TARZAN E.T. NUCLEAR FRIDGE. I went to see that new Audrey Tautou film Priceless, kind of a farce and comedy of errors type story, quite well done mind. Even if it was a complete lie, it was nonetheless a pleasant lie and quite entertaining. She's getting a bit skinny and shiny faced though, so all is not well in the kingdom of man
