Absolutely amazing work, very inspiring. How much do you value the important of using reference for your typical painting? Are the scenes in your recent artworks (for example) from photos or imagination? Sorry for the interview lol I'm just curious.

i'd say if you're not using references (and you're not doing totally abstract art) you're most likely wasting your time, plain and simple. you can utilize references in a lot of different ways, though: for instance, sometimes i'll basically try to recreate an entire composition 1:1, but most of the time i pull from a lot of different references to make something original. so like if i want to do a picture of my characters sitting in a window, i'll look at tons of pictures of windows to get my own ideas for an original window design, or just pull elements directly from multiple pictures and mix & match them into something new. then i might even look at a few references for lighting and how light relates to windows. it usually ends up being a mixture of original ideas and ideas you've remixed or even straight up copied from other stuff. it works for the broad strokes (like the general vibe/scene/location) as well as the minutiae (what exactly does a metallic bucket look like and how should i go about rendering it? or something...) just pull up some pictures!
