And thank you for the fave!

I was intrigued by your comment on your site about liking the English language because of its being "pure." I had never thought of it in that way before. My only other real experience with another language has been French in school, which I thought was very expressive, but English as seeming particularly pure? I'd like to know more.

Cavaille In reply to kcdevin [2007-01-20 05:53:29 +0000 UTC]

yes, many scientists in the 15th to 16th century preferred english as there chosen language - one reason was of course the roman catholic church couldnΒ΄t understand it. the church marked english as unpure. funny, isnΒ΄t it? so, english had become the language of science - and it still is.

and my personal opinion is, that english can be a very pure language; one reason may be grammatical simplicity compared to something like french or german. french sounds beautiful, but iΒ΄m unable to understand the grammar. german is my mother language... but you know... as it is with mother languages, they are boring.

but hey, in the end, they all developed out of one language. all languages in europe are - with the exception of finland & hungary.

kcdevin In reply to Cavaille [2007-01-20 06:49:24 +0000 UTC]

I was unaware that scientists preferred English that long ago. I thought the scientists in Europe were using Latin so they could communicate with each other, at least until the time of Newton in the 17th/18th centuries, but you are talking about using English as a means to obfuscate (at least in terms of the authorities).

I appreciate your comment about one's native language. Often it's difficult for me to perceive English objectively, especially in terms of the way the language sounds. Although I have an idea of what French or German "sound like" since I can listen to them without understanding them (German tends to sound staccato to me while French sounds smooth and sensuous), since I can't possibly hear English spoken without focusing on the meaning, it's hard for me to know what English "sounds like" to someone who doesn't speak it. I appreciate your comment about English grammar because I know some people find it difficult to learn (including fellow native English speakers - ha!) but fortunately for me English grammar always just seemed to make sense.

I love linguistics in general and the typography study "Tik" in my gallery speaks to the deep relationship between language families throughout the world, ultimately tens of thousands of years ago. Thanks for intellectually stimulating remarks!
