Well, here he was again, doing extra work that he didn't quite believe in. But he did it anyways. It was his job, and he did it right. Morals didn't matter, it was the fulfillment of goals and objectives that determined whether or not he succeeded. He stopped on the porch of Jayx's house and dug through the duffle bag slung over his shoulder. It looked strangely juvenile against his large shoulders, his red-brown skin, his calloused hands and scarred body, his hair, dark and tightly pulled back against his skull. He found his key ring and cursed lightly. Jayx's key wasn't on it anymore, for some stupid reason. He sat the bag down and pulled out a little dark roll of fabric. He kneeled down and unrolled it, choosing his instruments carefully. He stuck them in the lock and, after several quiet moments, he heard a click. He turned the knob and then removed the lock-picking gear. He was replacing the tools when he heard a car pull into the driveway. He furrowed his eyebrows and turned quickly, sliding his pocketknife from his jeans to the sleeve of his jacket, where he quickly released it with the handle in his palm, so he'd be ready for whatever was there.

He didn't recognize the car, and the streetlights only illuminated part of it, leaving the driver in shadows. He leapt off the steps and marched towards them, the knife gripped tightly in his palm. He saw the figure turned towards the back of the car, opening the backseat door on the drivers side and leaning in to get something. He moved with ginger, quiet steps, and leaned against the open backseat door, letting the knife slide into his hand so it was exposed, though it was held casually, reflecting his posture. He recognized the figure as a female, and felt a vague prickle of familiarity, but he didn't know her well enough to have remembered her. She straightened up and he raised his eyebrow at her as she saw him, his knife clearly exposed.
"Listen here, I have someone to take care of. And I don't want to risk their safety by getting into a fight here with you. But that's only going to happen if I find out quick who you are and what you're doing at this house."
His memory, so weak with remembering faces and names, told him he knew her. But if he couldn't be positive, he wasn't going to risk losing his supply chain.

Aroura glanced at the guy speaking to her in the dimly-lit driveway. Had it been any other driveway than this, she would have been scared and pulled the gun out from behind the tail-end of her shirt, but this was Jayx; Anyone was bound to show up, and all for the same reason. Plus, she was expecting him.

"Look, you can put away that sissy poker of yours and move so I can shut the door." Aroura bumped him with her hip, as to make sure he knew she wasn't attacking him. Getting stabbed she could take, but getting stabbed meant Jayx would kill the person responsible...not very good for business. Aroura slammed the door to her car and walked past the man, swinging her hips more than necessary. She smirked and pulled out the keys to Jayx's house only to find it open already. Her smirk grew, but her affection towards Jayx's new associate did not, "So, i guess you're the guy I'm supposed to be waiting on, huh?" Aroura pushed the door with more force than necessary to let herself in, "Jayx told me he would be running late, but to let you in if you hadn't invited yourself already, and put the stash in his safe." Aroura tossed her hair over one sholdure, "Jaereth, right? I'm Aroura, Jayx's...partner in crime."

Jaereth blinked and backed up, tilting his head and looking down at the much-shorter girl. She had asked him a question. He backed up a few paces and pressed his middle finger into the back of the blade, looking her over as he folded the blade down and replaced it in his pocket. He knew this girl, but from where he had no idea. He froze up when she bumped him, his nose wrinkling. He didn't like physical contact, and no one really touched him, ever. Linnel yes, but that one was obvious.

He followed her as she headed for the door.
"I wasn't told anyone was coming here. I wasn't even told to come here. I ah..."
He palmed the vial in his pocket and shrugged. He furrowed his eyebrows at the girl.
"Yeah, Jaereth. Are your legs okay? Your ass moves like hell when you walk."
He was oblivious to sexual advances, even fake ones.Β
"You were at the hospital. You're the girl who refused to leave him. The one who hit him."
He looked her over as he picked up his bag and gear. She was the opposite of what he was used to. She looked dainty, with her hips and colorful hair. She seemed far too cocky, too. But Jayx always liked them a little weird. He mentally compared her to Linnel. Both were small, both were full of surprises. But Linnel was quiet and thoughtful, and he had no idea how to get a hold on this girl. He knew Jayx, who was smart and trustworthy but impulsive and stupid; he knew Astericks, who was far too kind and trusting. But this Aroura, she was something he had no idea how to respond to.

Aroura laughed out loud at the awkwardness of Jaereth so hard that it force the woman to clasp her knees in laughter. It took a good minute to compose herself and gain self control enough to talk,
"I'm sorry, but you are the most awkward person I have ever seen, and man, I thought Jayx was bad!" Aroura coughed momentarily, still having a strong urge to laugh at the guy. The way he talked, the way he stood just screamed 'awkward'.

Aroura rounded the corner, entering Jayx's kitchen. . Aroura motioned for Jaereth to follow. It was messy, not unusual for her partner in crime. She mentally noted that the dishes would have to be done soon or bugs would invade. Aroura opened the nearest closet door, revealing a very cluttered broom closet. She pushed away boxes, revealing a square panel in the wall. She dug her fingers into the sides, prying it from the rest of the wall. Behind that sat a small safe big enough for a few files, some cash, and dope. Aroura twisted the knob, twisting the combination: 8-46-14. A small click opened the safe. Aroura backed out of the closet,
"Your money is in the envelope. Count and double-check, would ya? Then leave the drugs and close it." She stepped out of the way to allow Jaereth in, "and yeah, I was the chick who slapped him in the hospital. If memory serves correct, you were the one who gave him that faulty shit."
She crossed her arms, plastering a complete look of seriousness. In an irritated voice, she snapped at the dumbass, "And no, I don't have a problem with my legs. Some straight guys would call it being sexy."

When Aroura started laughing, Jaereth backed further away. He didn't like this girl, and his head was starting to pound hard. He followed her inside, though he kept a healthy distance from her. He didn't like how she seemed to enjoy pretending she knew Jayx so much better than he did. He knew Jayx lied to her quite regularly, and he could see why.

He knelt down in the closet and swung his legs around so he could sit cross-legged. He pulled the envelope out and started counting and then double checking. He mouthed the numbers as he went, adding up his fees. 200 for the drugs, 50 for running it, 60 labor. He went ahead and took an extra 20 because he could, and because he felt he deserved it. He slid a paper bag full of the goods into the safe and shut it. He stood up and folded the cash over his index finger, stowing it in his pocket and sliding by Aroura as quickly as he could. He stood several feet away from her and listened to her speak.
"You seem to think you own him, hm? And, ah...do not hit him. He did nothing to deserve that. It was unfair of you.Β Please don't consider that he's yours, you'll only end up hurt."
He didn't quite mean that Jayx would hurt her, but he also knew that this was a bad business to be forming serious bonds in.

The comment about his sexuality once again put him off, and he found the tensions inside him building up. He backed away a bit more.Β
"I don't understand."
He left it at that, though, needing some quiet time as well as having a job to finish. He headed down the hallways to Jayx's bedroom, shutting and locking the door swiftly to keep Aroura out. He went to the small media shelf beside Jayx's desk and dug around, finding what he was looking for quickly: a copy of a Shel Silverstein book, 3rd in a group of 7 similar books. He opened it, revealing a small pocket carved into the book. He replaced the book and wrote a note for Jayx on a sticky note.
"Meeting at 7, the Nook"
That seemed to be everything he needed. He unlocked the door to head back out, his head buzzing endlessly.Β

Aroura crossed her arms as she watched Jaereth leave Jayx's room, heading for the front door. Something about that guy just irked her and left a feeling irritation in his wake. Out of all the dealers, of course Jayx would be associated with just the right asshole. As she watched him leave, Aroura couldn't help but wonder what he was doing locked in Jayx's room. It was just enough time to...hide something? Dope?

Aroura made her way into Jayx's bedroom, closing the door silently behind her. Though she knew no one was home, and she would hear Jayx come inside before getting caught, Aroura felt like snooping around his personal space required absolute concentration. Like an espionage mission. Aroura rolled her eyes at herself, but allowed herself to imagine inspecting Jayx's room was a top secret mission and the world would die if she didn't find what was hidden...

Since Jayx's release from the hospital, Aroura had keeping a close eye on his drug-dealing friend. Β She trusted Jaereth about as far as she could throw him, considering he was the one to land Jayx in the hospital. Dope came with the job description, and Aroura knew the danger of selling, but Jayx did not want to depend on his father for anything. So, Aroura accepted he sold...and he took. That was what she was trying to keep him from doing now, especially after the hospitalization....

Aroura opened a drawer to Jayx's bedside table, finding nothing of interest. She moved slowly around the room, opening and picking up random objects, half hoping to find some dope and half praying not to. Before Aroura could finish circling the room (finding nothing in the process), her phone buzzed. Her heart beat quickly, automatically assuming she had been caught. Then she realized it was only her phone.

"Hey, Jayx..." Aroura breathed into the receiver, trying to slow her heart rate, "I let Jaereth in and he made the swap. I don't like him. AT. ALL. He's such an ass." Aroura closed the drawer she was looking in and leaned against his bookshelf, "Anyways, when are you coming back?"

Jaereth glanced over his shoulder as he headed for the door, seeing the Aroura girl disappear into Jayx's room. He felt a surge of protective instinct that died down almost immediately. Still, it was strange. He rarely felt that way about anyone but Linnel. It was a strange feeling, and it made Jaereth think. He wasn't protective of Linnel for the same reasons he was, for lack of a better term, dating Linnel. It was moreso he was protective of him because he was a person worth protecting. He guessed that the same rule applied to Jayx as well. He left it at that as he jogged down the steps to Jayx's home and set off into the night, streetlamps the only source of illumination in the starless sky.

Jayx found himself sitting in the fourth of many rehab sessions. His recovery had exhibited itself like this: Cold mornings spent in sessions with expensive therapists. Beautifully sunny yet cool days spent in circled-up sets of chairs filled with the cast of a strange tragedy: from trust-fund babies who'd "Just gotten into a bit of trouble" to old men who'd lost their lives to the bottle. As evening came, so did a new intensity to the hunger that rumbled through him, often just a tiny voice in the back of his head. At night, the hunger grew to a roaring beast, demanding from him what he couldn't give.

Recovery was definitely important, Jayx knew it. He'd spent a large portion of the last few years sedating himself in his down time, forcing himself to stop thinking at all costs. It wasn't as if he had a problem personally with the situation; it had always worked just fine for him. But the thing was, those around him didn't like it. Those around him were afraid for his safety. Jayx figured it was easier to try and fail then to endure more lecturing and tears.

He was driving home when a rush of this hunger swept over his body like a wave. He lost grip of the wheel for a short moment as his stomach panged and his head spun. He had enough time to avoid slamming into another car, but only just. A chorus of honks accompanied his digging out his phone. He opened the dailer via a shortcut key, and then hit speed-dial number 7. He didn't have six people ahead of Aroura on speed-dial, he just liked the number for her specifically.

The phone rang, one long tone. A note through the second tonation she picked up. Short break as she raised the phone to her ear.
"Hey, Jayx..."
Jayx opened his mouth to tell her how scared he was, how much his heart was racing, how sweaty his palms were against the wheel. She launched into a rant, though, and he felt his complaints slip slowly away. He waited until she'd finished, his eyes searching out his neighborhood's turn-in automatically. He wasn't letting himself think about driving, for fear he'd feel that dread wash over him once again.

"He's a good guy, Aroura. He's on our side. I'm turning down the street now okay?"
He went silent as he drifted the car into the driveway, pulling up alongside Aroura's car. He shut the car off but waited to go inside, making sure his breathing was okay. He checked his eyes in the mirror. They were a little red, but not bad. He headed inside, knocking on the wall as he walked in so Aroura would know he was here.

He headed for the kitchen first, pouring himself a glass of orange juice. There was a bottle of vodka hidden away in a panel in one of the cabinets, but he resisted the urge to spike the juice and take off the edge on his nerves. He drained his glass quickly, its coolness helping soothe some of the rolling fear inside him. He piled the glass in the overflowing sink and headed down the hallway. There was no one anywhere it seemed, so he headed towards the bedrooms. Guest room, empty. The spare room that had become a haven for those needing to crash was also abandoned. He opened the closed door to his room, slightly nervous as to why it was closed.

"Rory, what are you doing in here?"
He leaned on the doorjamb and raised an eyebrow. He knew she didn't trust him, but he wanted to ask anyways.

Aroura jumped, slamming one of his beurau drawers shut in the process at the sound of Jayx's voice. Quickly, she whirled around, standing face-to-face with the man she had been snooping on. Jayx crossed his arms and cocked an eyebrow.

Aroura blushed, backing into the beurau, knowing that she had been caught red-handed. "Oh, Jayx! I didn't know you would be home this early..." She looked around nurvously, "I was just...um...cleaning up a bit." She smiled and grabbed a dirty shirt off the foor a bit too quickly. Aroura moved towards Jayx, who was standing in the way of the closed door, "If you would excuse me, I have some washing to do." She nurvously looked up at her dark-haired friend, knowing that he could see through her bullshit.

It had been a long-ass damn-stressful cock-suckingly-shitty day, and he came in hearing rustling in his bedroom. He walked to his dresser, the one Aroura was rummaging through, and looked down at her. He reached behind him and pulled out a pistol from the waistband of his slacks, placing it on the dresser.Β
"I nearly shot you."

He left the gun and flopped on his bed, clearly pissed. His eyes had deep circles beneath them and his head was banging from withdrawl pains. He rolled his eyes up to the ceiling slowly, as if it hurt to move them.Β
"Looking for drugs? Bah. Thought my best friend would fucking trust me."

Aroura glanced at the gun, a chill rolling down her spine. Would he have really shot her by accident? It shouldn't have surprised her; Jayx carried the gun with him whenever he wasn't on school grounds. Aroura watched as the disheveled man threw himself on his bed.

"Looking for drugs? Thought my best friend would fucking trust me." His words pierced her heart. She knew he was angry, and it hurt that he knew her doubts about him. Aroura could not think of another excuse, and opted instead to tell him the truth.

"Jayx..." She said quietly, leaning against the dresser tiredly, "Look...Yeah, I was looking for drugs. But...do you really blame me? This isn't the first time you've tried to be clean, but I want to make sure it's your last. You almost died, for christ sake! Give me some credit for this! It's not fun to sneak around and lie, but it's also not fun to watch your best friend waste away in a shaky half-conscious stupor!" Aroura took a breath, then sighed. She slowly moved her way to the bed, sitting, and then laying next to Jayx. Her small frame barely brushed his larger one, "I can't say I'm sorry, or that I trust you...but I can say that I love you enough to try."

Jayx's finger still twitched slightly, ready to fire. He was an inch away from shooting the person he called his best friend; at this point, he was so pissed he probably still could have shot her. He worked his ass off trying to get sober and no one trusted him. He ran a hand through his hair, ruffling it so it stuck up slightly.Β

"So you don't trust me. Woo-fucking-hoo."
She didn't love him, she just wanted to control him. Wanted to stop him from doing what he wanted. It was his body, his life. Who cared what he did with it?
"Why don't you take your love and give it to someone who gives a shit?"
He rolled over, avoiding touching her, and sighed deeply. He was sick of everyone controlling him. His shoulders tightened inward and he let out another shaky sigh. His voice broke when me murmured out,
"Acting like you give a shit, why don't you listen to what I'm actually saying instead of trying to think for me?"

Aroura sighed. He was right; She needed to trust him more. Jayx really was trying and she wasn't helping the situation by sneaking around assuming he was hiding things when he really wasnt.

"Jayx..." Aroura breathed, turning to wrap an arm around his chest so that her face was pressed firmly against his back. "I am sorry..." she murmered into his shirt, smelling of sweat and home, "And I really do love you, ya lugnut. I wouldn't be here if I didn't." She squeezed him tightly, "I promise I will listen you you more, okay? I'm not use to this new sober Jayx yet."

Jayx closed his eyes and curled his arms tightly against his body, the one little needle mark from where he'd messed up a week ago stinging. No one knew yet, and he wanted to keep it that way. He really was trying for probably the first time, and he didn't want to lose what little trust he'd made. It was just so hard to feel good when all he had was drugs. He paid his bills with drugs, made his life with drugs. It made sense he'd take some time to work his way to the other side. Hell, he didn't know if he even wanted to. What waited for him there, other than more lonely emptiness?

He shoved back against her gently and rolled onto his back.Β
"It'll take us all time. Just trust me, okay? Trust me to be safe in my own way and to do things right this time."

((Sorry it's short))

Aroura moved to allow Jayx more room. β€œI trust you…” She murmured, readjusting herself so that she was snuggled to his side, β€œBut you know me, wanting to control everything…” When he didn’t respond, Aroura took the quiet moment to gaze at Jayx’s features, sharp in their own right. Practically perfect skin unmarred by blemishes. His dark eyes ringed with circles staring up at the ceiling as if something interesting were painted on it.

Years of friendship made their relationship so easy sometimes. Others, it was hard to deal with this infuriating, lazy, hard-headed person. And yet, Aroura loved him. Somehow, through all the shit they thrown at each other over the years, they still fit together like two misfit puzzle pieces.

Aroura smiled softly and closed her eyes, cuddling to his arm more, β€œSo what do you want to do tonight, Jeremy?” Β

(It's ok. So is mine.)

Jayx felt a single tear well up in his eye at how damn hard everything was. He just wanted a bottle, a needle, something. He rolled over to face Aroura and sighed.
"Honest, I don't know. Really, I want something to change how I feel. Drugs, alcohol, something to make me feel better."

It was rare that he let himself open up enough for someone to see inside as to why he did what he did, but tonight he opened himself wide.

"I don't like the drugs because they're bad for me or just to get high. I like the drugs because they stop the pain. The constant pain of being an absolute failure at everything I do. If you know something that can break that horrible feeling, something that can make me feel happy again, damn it I'd love it."

Time does weird things. People drift apart. That's how Jayx was. Except, in this situation, it wasn't a team effort. It had been all him.Β
For months, he'd been avoiding Rory. But damn it, he was so jealous. So angry. She'd just started dating some fruitcake, Regen.Β
"Fucking slime."
He growled under his breath, popping his knuckles. Why was it that she got an escape, and he got the same bullshit. He leaned against a tree, their tree, his knees to his chest. He looked up at the branches. Who was there when her dad died? Who was there when the rumors started? Jayx. He shook his head. It was stupid. She was his friend. He dug in his pocket for his most recent acquisition, an amber vial. He checked his backpack, and found the bagged bundle of syringes. He uncapped one, pumping the plunger a few times. Then he took the bright orange cap off of the tip, looking at the needle until he was sure it was sharp. He wasn't stupid when it came to his drugs. He stuck the needle into the vial, withdrawing a quarter of the liquid, which was the syringe's capacity. He tapped the needle on his skin for a moment, tracing the vein in his forearm. He flexed, making the vein pop up. He slid it in slowly, deep into the vein. As he let the plunger slide, he felt relief, a placebo of the entrance of something to make him feel better. Alive.
But then, fire. Molten fire. He dug his head into the bark of the tree and clenched his fist, his jaw.Β
"SHIT!"
He growled between clenched teeth. What the hell? His hands, his arms, his shoulders started to shake, tremors flowing through his body. He closed his eyes tight, letting the fire run through him. Maybe it would stop sometime.Β

Aroura walked, schoolbooks held to her chest, towards the parking lot of the school. Regen would be waiting for her to grab a quick coffee before work. She had almost made it to the gates of DuBay when a murmur through the students made her stop.
"Is he okay?" "Naw, man, looks like that guys officially lost his nut."
Out of sheer curiosity, Aroura stopped to look at who her peers were whispering about. Her pupils grew wide as she made eye contact with a doped up Jayx.
"Oh know", Aroura gasped, frantically pushing herself through the thickening crowd, everyone seeming to find interest in her friend. She dropped her books in a messy pile and grabbed Jayx's face.
"Can you hear me?" Ari asked quickly, pulling one hand away from her friend's clammy face to check his pulse, which was running too fast for her liking.

Jayx heard whispers floating through his mind, not all of them the kids around him. Some were his father, who never let Jayx feel like his accomplishments were enough. Some were a quiet, singing voice from long ago. He couldn't put a name to the voice, but she sounded oh so beautiful. He opened his eyes and came face-to-face with Aroura. Her features swam before his eyes, like she was in water. Or was he? His limbs felt too heavy for him to be in water. He tried to lift his hand, but he couldn't make it move. He smiled.Β
"Owry..."
He tried to say her name, but his words slurred. His pupils beneath his half-lidded eyes expanded and contracted rapidly. He felt a pain in his chest, like his heart was going to explode. His breathing picked up, and he winced. The vial rolled from his hand, its liquid sloshing. He shivered once, hard, and his eyes rolled. He blinked a few times, trying to focus on Aroura.
"Aahrey."

"I'm here, Jayx. You are going to be okay." Jayx's head was wobbling on his neck, pulse running like a freight train, and sweat pouring from his temples, "someone call the damn ambulance!" Aroura yelled, "don't just fucking stare! Help me!"
Aroura kneeled behind Jayx's head and laid his head on her lap. "It's okay Jayx....it's okay." She whispered, carefully smoothing sweaty hair from his forehead. "Just stay with me...please..."

Jayx had one clear thought. Why was Aroura so upset? He felt cool rain on his cheeks, reducing the fire inside him. But it wasn't rain, it was Aroura's tears. He raised his hand slowly, trying to find her face to comfort her. But despite where her blurry vision fell, he couldn't feel her skin beneath his fingers. He sat up shakily, but then gasped at a sharp pain in his stomach. He clenched his teeth, rolling off of Aroura's lap as he tried to cradle his stomach. A siren echoed in his ears, quickly elevating from dull to painfully loud. He shivered again, and then vomited in the grass. The paramedics rushed from the ambulance, a stretcher between them as they ran across the grass.
"What happened to him?"
One asked as they rolled Jayx onto his back. They lifted him onto a body board, strapping him down to reduce the spasming that had begun to overtake him. They took his pulse and hooked him up to an oxygen bag. The one taking his pulse noticed the trackmarks, including the fresh site. He looked to Aroura.Β
"What did your boyfriend take?"
His voice was kind, but rushed. His partner started wheeling Jayx towards the ambulance, where another paramedic ran to meet him and help. The paramedic who'd spoken to Aroura gently helped her to her feet and held her arm gently, leading her towards the ambulance.
"If you want to ride with him, you can. But he's looking pretty rough. How long has it been since he took?"

Aroura didn't have to be told twice to get in the ambulance with Jayx. There was no second thought. She quickly jumped in and grabbed hold of Jayx's hand through the whirlwind of paramedics. "I guess not too long ago. He was supposed to be clean! He hasn't used in a while!" Aroura sputtered to the paramedic. He nodded and turned, outing something into Jayx's IV. Aroura wiped away a tear,
"You dumbass. I thought you had stopped. You dumbass..." Aroura held back sobs for Jayx's sake, not wanting him to see her so broken even if it were through his dilerium. "Just look at me, Jayx. Look. At. Me." Aroura squeezed his hand, "I can't lose you..." The ambulance lurched foreword harshly and sirens wailed in their ears. All Aroura could pay attention to was Jayx's pale face.

((Sorry for the wait, I ended up falling asleep pretty hard))

The paramedics worked quickly over Jayx, the paramedic who'd spoken keeping Aroura updated. Jayx kept trying to speak, trying to sit up. They ended up securing him down to keep him from hurting himself. They arrived at the hospital pretty quickly, and they wheeled Jayx off. The paramedic who'd spoken took Aroura's arm and led her to a private waiting room.Β
"They're sedating him soon. Once we figure out what he took, we can try and fix it."
He looked at Aroura's face for a minute, her tears and her obvious worry.Β
"Do you remember anything at all? Anything that may have caused him to go off?"

Aroura shook her head wildly,
"No! We have been more distant than usual, and his home life isn't all that great, but he would never do this!" Aroura sobbed into her hands, "He's been avoiding me, which is so unlike him! I should have seen the sighs!" Her breathing became rapid as she began hyperventilating. Aroura quickly say down out of panic, "he's everything I got! He can't leave me now! Please, just save him!"

The paramedic kneeled in front of the sobbing girl and took her hand, looking into her eyes with calmness and determination.Β
"Honey, shh. Calm down. Listen, my name's Ash. Ok? My friends call me Astericks. And I promise you, I'll do whatever I can to help your friend. I'm not a doctor, but I can get updates on him for you. Alright?"
He stood up and smiled at the girl, his grin a bit too wide and awkward on his thin face.Β
"I give you my word, alright?"
He winked, but it wasn't a flirtatious wink. Like is smile, it was kinda awkward. He ran off to check on Jayx.

When he returned, he had another huge smile on his face.
"Hey! Your friend's asleep now. They pumped some charcoal into him and he's starting to come down. He might be a bit grumpy for a while, and maybe a bit of withdrawl, but he'll be fine. Whatever he injected was probably a bad batch of something. You can go see him soon, if you want. Just, y'know, don't beat him up. Yet."
He reached out a hand to help her up.

Aroura nodded and took Astericks' hand, standing and smiling at the man. During her wait, Aroura's breathing had returned to normal and had allowed herself to become collected enough to let Regen and Constantine know what was going on.
"Thank you, Astericks. I really appreciate what you have done for me. What room is he in, I want to see him."

It was good news that Jayx was now stable, but god, did she want to beat the shit out of her friend. How stupid could he be?! She tethered on the border if why-didn't-I-see-this-coming and you-stupid-asshole.

Astericks led Aroura slowly down the hallways, trying to keep an eye on her reactions.Β
"Just this way. Just, y'know, remember that he might feel pretty bad. If he's awake."
He checked his pager, trying to guess how much longer he could hang around the hospital. He opened the door a bit to peek in before letting Aroura into the room.Β

Jayx laid on a bed, still looking pale and sick, but already texting someone. He looked sort of pissed as he texted Jaereth, asking him who the hell had ran the last shipment and who all had bought from it, so he could go refund them. He looked up when the door opened.
"Ast, what are you doing here?"
"Working. Your girlfriend was pretty worried about you."
"Not my girlfriend, asshole."
Astericks laughed and gestured for Aroura to go on.Β
"I've got to get back to work, Jeremy."
"Don't call me that."
Jayx waved, though his arm could only move so far with the IV in it. He looked at Aroura.
"Hey, Rory."

Aroura did not hold back any anger as her palm slapped against Jayx's cheek,
"Don't you 'hey Rory' me, you jackass! What were you thinking! You almost fucking died, Jayx! And where would that leave me? You're all I've got, damnit!" Tears brimmed her eyes for the hundredth time today, "you're smarter than to take some faulty drug!" An angry tear escaped and slid down Ari's cheek, but she quickly wiped it away, "I love you, Jayx. What the hell were you thinking?!" Ari's body crumpled next to Jayx's bed as she sobbed, "what the hell were you thinking!"

Jayx's head flew to the side, and he took a moment to recompose himself before turning to Aroura again. His stomach hurt from the slap. He blinked at her for a minute, and then smiled.
"I'm fine. I was thinking I'd love to feel good for once, Rory."
He reached out and ran his fingers through her hair as she cried, the emptiness already starting to come back, invading his chest like a block of ice.Β
"I'm sorry if I worried you. I just wanted to feel good, you know?"
He looked at the clock on the wall.
"Didn't you have a date with Regen? At the coffee shop?"

"Why do you need drugs to feel good?" Aroura gasped, trying to compose herself and failing miserably, "and who gives a shit about a stupid date. You are in the hospital for some shitty drugs! This is by far more important!" Ari wiped her eyes before standing to examine Jayx's face, "damn...I really did do a number on you. I'm sorry..." Ari leaned over and kissed his reddened cheek, "but you fucking deserved it. Please don't ever do that again..."

Jayx shrugged.
"How else do you feel good? Sex and drugs. That's all that makes it better."
He looked away and then looked back again, a sad look in his eyes.
"You should have gone. He'll worry about you, Rory."
He winced when she touched his cheek, nodding at her comment. It had hurt a lot, but the pain was already fading.Β
"You're gonna get thrown out of the hospital for assaulting a patient, you know?"
He laughed and then adjusted himself in the bed. He felt like shit.
"Why would I subject myself to this brand of torture again?

Aroura laughed,
"If they tried to throw me out, I'd go crazy. Plus, you aren't going to charge me with assault" she ran her thumb gently over the area, "promise me that you will never shoot up again. Ever. No matter how shitty things get. You can feel good without it. Believe me." Aroura smiled at Jayx, taking a seat on the edge of his bed, grasping his hand in hers,
"And Regen won't care about missed coffe. You are more important to me, Jeremy."

Jayx pulled away a little from Aroura's touch, wincing at the still-tender skin.
"Then stop hitting me."
He was whispering, starting to feel tired again. He reached out and grabbed the collar of her shirt, pulling her towards him and kissing her.Β
"Chill. I don't make promises, Rory. But maybe I'll avoid the shitty stuff."
He rolled over onto his side, trying to relax some. He hated laying on his back.
"And don't call me Jeremy."
He mumbled, already drifting off.

(Shit, part of my post got erased. Fucking phone -.-)

Aroura's fingers flew to her lips. Did he just kiss her! Ari's face grew red. Sure they had kissed before, but it was usually under an alcohol or drug induced moment. Never when both were still sober. How was she supposed to react to that?! She had a boyfriend!

Aroura chewed her lip and busied herself with rubbing the exposed back beside her. "Why did you just do that?" Aroura increased the pressure on his sholdure blades, as he was the most tense there. "And why do you take that stuff. What's so wrong that you have to drown away your life to the poor of almost killing yourself?"

(Still short. Blame the boyfriend for distracting me -.-)

Aroura's fingers flew to her lips. He had just kissed her! Ari's face grew red, "just...why do you do it?" She began rubbing small circles on his back that was exposed to her, "why do this to yourself?" Aroura's face grew redder, "I really do mean I love you...I don't like seeing you like this..."

(Sorry for the short post...)

Jayx shrugged. He rolled his back a little bit, though, into Aroura's touch.
"I do it because I'm sick of feeling so damn empty. I'm sick of feeling absolutely nothing. My dad doesn't give two shits about me, and everyone around me is finding new ways to make it feel better. But I'm stuck here, ruining my body for the sake of a little happiness. You have Regen, Ast and Jaereth have work. But I'm here on this little island that none of you can reach."
He sighed deeply. He had never admitted that much to anyone. He buried his face in the pillow to make it not real, his arm already itching for another needle.

Aroura looked down at the face of Jayx...he was obviously in a lot of pain. She hated to see her friend like this. They had been through each others highs and lowest point of each others life, and this was pretty damn close to Jayx's rock bottom. Fresh tears brimmed her eyes. Aroura was helpless to help Jayx, and that hurt more than anything he had ever said or done to her...she just wanted to protect him...
"Jayx, you have me..."

Jayx didn't look over his shoulder, but he reached over it to grab her hand. He pulled it to his chest, knocking her off balance as he did. He nuzzled and cuddled her hand, trying to get comfortable.
"Stop crying."
He was way too tired to be dealing with her emotional girl shit. He closed his eyes, trying to get some sleep. He had so much he wanted to say, that it was alright, he'd be fine, she needed to stop worrying. But he knew she'd just respond with the same stuff. So instead he held her arm tightly, but not painfully, and tried to rest.Β

Aroura was shocked at the sudden jolt of being pulled down next to Jayx, but he seemed content holding her hand, and after this rough day, if it offered any comfort, she was glad to let him have it.

"I'll try, Jayx. I am a girl, after all." Aroura halfheartedly joked. After a moment of silence, she got closer to Jayx, trying to get more comfortable. She laid her head next to Jayx, smelling his hair deeply. It had always smelled good, but being close to it was delicious.

Her free hand wandered to his hair, closing her eyes and letting her hand gently comb out the tangles. There were many emotions raging through her, all confusing. And that kiss didn't help...all she could do was lay here and give comfort to her dearest friend.

Jayx's sleep was quick and much, much better than reality. His dreams were flowing and nice, not a single drug, cigarette, or bottle of booze in sight. He let out contented sounds as he pressed his head into Aroura's touch. He found solace in this unconsciousness, moreso than in any of his conscious escapes. He felt better, as if nothing in his life could harm him any longer. It was temporary, said the logical part of his head, but that part was overwhelmed at the moment. In his head, a group of people he loved, Aroura, Jae, his other friends, led him to the future, where new people and happiness awaited.

The door opening awoke him late that night, and Astericks was standing there with Jaereth. Astericks had that stupid smile on his face, his street clothes on, and a small vial in his hand. Jayx smiled a bit and rolled over, trying not to disturb the sleeping Aroura.
"Ast, you bastard."
"Chill, man. Saved your life today. Again."
Jayx sat up as far as he could and hugged the two, and they all sat back and started discussing the trade, how they'd get the refunds done, how to prevent this from happening again. And Jayx realized another thing that made him happy; his business. Yeah, it was drugs, but it was a passion.Β
