Hi I wanted to make a piece about unanswerable questions. I think you didn't answer this one, but you may have answered it elsewhere. Did you or do you have an answer:

"You have a long lost half brother who you never met. He finds out where you live. Rushing over to surprise visit you, he has a car accident. You are told by doctors he will be in a coma for five years, then will almost certainly recover. Because of budget cuts, they will have to shut off his support machine, unless you can pay them half your savings. If they shut off the machine, he will die painlessly without knowing what happened.

a) spend money now so in 5 years you will have a personal relationship with a relative
b) keep your money"

"angry people who think they're defending themselves"

I guess you haven't seen the security camera vids or the singing of old Islamic battle cries.

Give a look at some of the vids on this channel -- [link] -- for some inexplicable reason, almost all of the international media the I've watched ignores this info.

You're into cognitive science? Neato. Any specific discipline?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lima-bean In reply to Roy-Tirann [2010-05-14 13:00:00 +0000 UTC]

Probably most specifically psychology (I'm doing a design course, so even more specifically how it relates to advertising!) and a bit of anthropology and neuroscience. I've only recently done serious business reading into the subject though, but it fascinates me. I love wafting through the Mind & Brain section of Science Daily [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Roy-Tirann In reply to lima-bean [2010-05-14 17:25:00 +0000 UTC]

So is it actually part of your design course then?

And bookmarked; even though reading anything over three paragraphs off a monitor still irks me greatly. The AI section should be interesting as well.

lima-bean In reply to Roy-Tirann [2010-05-15 01:18:48 +0000 UTC]

No it isn't. Personal interest, but it being applicable certainly helps, since I can use it in my rationales on why I chose to do what I did and shazam, more points, more High Distinctions.

Same here, however I haven't found many books on psychology at the library that grab my attention.

Not yet, but that is the goal.

How 'bout you, which field are you most interested in?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Roy-Tirann In reply to lima-bean [2010-05-16 12:25:03 +0000 UTC]

I took a philosophical anthropology course on the mind-body problem, and a lot of insights from various disciplines were discussed. So I suppose philosophy of mind comes first, and perhaps artificial intelligence second. I'm considering picking up a artificial intelligence minor next year, actually.

Also, this just came to mind; have you read anything by Oliver Sacks? I The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat is supposed to be an interesting neurology/psychology book that's easy to read through. I haven't read it myself yet, but some of the stories in there are bizarre as fuck (as you may expect with a title like that). It's probably not going to add much to your design course, however.

It is a black sun. Skipping the story it is a symbol of the left hand path, a rejection of the status quo and a questioning of set morality. I'm also more or less left wing socio-politically.

lima-bean In reply to lycaenops [2010-04-07 06:14:53 +0000 UTC]

Probably not, I did skip the story after all. Your familiar with it as used by the Nazis I suspect? The Nazis though they were descendent of the Aryans who followed the 'wheel of the black sun', the source of energy in the centre of the earth.
