oh definitely! I'm trying to learn how to paint. And I'm experimenting with acrylic and oils. Do you have any tips?

Experimenting is good. One thing you can do is use a seperate piece of paper to try out ideas. That way you can have a quick practice before you touch your good painting, and you can see how the colour of the paint changes a little when it is dry. Looking at other peoples work seems to help me too. The best way to get realy good is to practice a lot.
I wish you lots and lots of luck

Thanks. I was wondering about what technique you use for oils. I know that oils take a lot longer to dry, so as far as details, I've seen a couple of ways. Do you prefer to layer on colors for details? or do you paint around the details until you get to those colors? and if you do layer them, how do you prevent from smudging or mixing in with the previous layer of color? if that makes sense lol

no problem! I'm trying to learn how to paint. I get the gist of it but I'm still trying to look at techniques. This one's a good goal to reach. How big is this painting?

Hi. The painting is about 11 by 8 inches. I usually paint fairly small as larger paintings take forever due to the techniques I use. If you need any help or advice don't be afraid to ask.

Wow! That's kinda cool. Usually people do it on larger canvases to get better details. For me, fine brushes are difficult to get details on small canvases, like hair especially.

Hi. I love to use fine brushes. On pretty much every painting I do I finish with a 000 size brush. I keep the paint nice and fluid and put all the fine details in. It's my favourite part and can really add to the painting.

Mmm
Try drawing the hair first, smudge a little with a qtip, then smudge that on some spare bit of paper til it's really light. Then use that qtip to outline the face. So basically, shade first, outline later? Yep try that out.

I use charcoal pencils, so fine tips help a great deal - especially when drawing small.
Some advice... have some cotton balls, q tips and tortillions handy for the smudging - you don't want your finger prints on them 'cause erasing it without ruining the shading surrounding it is quite le bitch.
When it comes to the initial drawing, just make sure your outlines are faint so it can easily be erased and the parts that you do draw need to be the darker parts of the image - otherwise it won't be removable.
Other than that? Constant practice!
