Omg, I know how you feel, I'm also fluctuating quite a bit with style. Trying new things. Digital lineart can be especially tricky to get used to though. Took me a while to get it going.

I tried lineart a few years back and I sucked so I just started painting to cover up all my lines. And now Im gonna need lines for character sheets in animation(I start my major in Aug 2014) because painting is too time consuming. Style wise youre pretty set in the sense its recognized, but as to how satisfied you are thats another story.

I know what you mean! Tumblr is good for exposure, DA is better for feedback, but that's why I always put everything up here first and then share it from here. That way you get the best of both worlds! I struggle to get really good critique here though :/

If you look back in my gallery you may notice a LOT of my images just have the original pencils lines with colour slapped on top XD It doesn't look bad, but it was also cos I didn't have a tablet to do nice weighted lines with (even though I wouldn't call my lineart nice because up close it looks like a dog's breakfast). I just cheat by doing my lineart on a really large canvas, then when it's downsized it looks much neater XD

Oh thank you! Yeah, a lot of people say they recognise my style, but I just feel like I could push it so much harder. I am an animator as well as an illustrator, so I'd like to try marry the two worlds.

Tumblr is beyond fantastic with exposure if you do it right. The thing about tumblr though is the effort you put in doesnt correspond with the response you get. Ive spent 3 days on a piece, like the Dia Des Los Muertos piece and the reception was like bleh and its really discouraging.

But your idea of using both is brilliant, and I hope you dont mind me doing the same :3

But the thing is with your older work your lines are still clean. Mine is all a sketchy mess because of unsteady hands. Ive heard of that metheod before though.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I try not to put too much importance on the amount of notes I get. Also when a certain fandom starts following you, you get way less notes on things that don't fit into the fandom which is frustrating, but I guess that also happens here.

My older lines only look neat because I clean them up using levels and the good old eraser in Photoshop. I can show you how if you like? It's easy

I lecture animation and concept art at a little college. I worked on an international series about 2 years ago and I went to Canada to get trained using Toon Boom. I'm the first Toon Boom certified trainer in my country I wish I had more time to animate though! I really need to do more.

Ive heard of Toon Boom! I tried it once(and got severely pissed at it) and then I resumed normal secondary studies. I only took art for a year and I didnt even learn much. Just did the final piece and process boards and thats it. What international series may I ask? (was is clash of the titans because I saw your gallery and it sparked a lot of memories and I watched a few episodes)

I really hate the fandom thing but its the best way to get exposed initially. And the note system does screw me over a lot so Im trying to ignore it. I remember you lost followers because you posted non YJ art before and I got so angry because of that.

Most of the time I set my lines to multiply and do a lot of pre-production like textures and colours and overlays, then paint right on it.

Hahah! I'm 28, I don't that's so young XD Toon Boom can be a little temperamental, but once you know how to use it it's amazing! I love it.

Ah, no it wasn't COTT, I WISH! It was a French show but to be honest I don't really want to mention it because although I learnt a lot, I wasn't happy with a lot of my work. I had to animate 90 tradigital (frame animated) shots in 2 weeks once, I almost died. Of course the quality suffered. That's why you don't see me mentioning it much. Also the studio that employed us ran off with our money, I lost R15 000.

Oh yeah, I hate complaining about people not paying attention to my other art, I can't control people after all, but that day I was just particularly annoyed XD

I mean the DA button!

Try this with your pencil lines - Open levels (ctrl l) and you'll see 3 little eyedroppers on the right (one grey, one black, one white). If you pick the white one, you can select the lighter scribbly lines in the image and anything that dark and lighter will disappear. Then use the arrows in your levels to darken what you have, or duplicate the layer and multiply.

Your art is still great though, I kinda like that arty sketchy look.

R is the symbol for rands, that's our currency R15000 is about $1600. The guy who took our money skipped the country and tried to open a studio in Canada using our portfolios :/ We were pretty pissed. I've heard he's back in the country. We did try to pursue something legally, but the amount of documentation required is crazy, especially since there were a few of us. It ended up being more trouble than it was worth.

Just the art you see on DA and Tumblr. The concept art I teach is more along the lines of art for cartoons, such as developing characters, designing them, background and location design etc It's not as hectic as the sort of thing you'd get for Lord of the Rings for instance.
