I just visited your page, and I read your deviant artist questionaire andΒ YOU KNOW ABOUT ALEX JESSUP?! He's my senior back in school! I sat next to him in class! Wow, small world.
I also checked out your stuff, you're pretty good man! I like the Chun Li, the Aleph Spec Ops Chandra, and the Pan Oceania Kamau ones you put alot of love into those adn they turned out really nice! But one bit of friendly advice, try to be careful with women's crotches that little bump on Chun Li's crotch makes her look like a man if you know what I mean.
Infinity is a great game btw, I've played it a couple of times, love it. But I don't have enough time to play it as much as I'd like to lol.

Wow that IS crazy. Ya I have been influenced by his work and followed him a long time. I am constantly adding new artists to my watch list though, especially when they have a similar taste in aesthetics to myself.
Thank you! I am a big fan of super detailed line work, and that was actually my main attraction at first, I have since broken out into painting, but have yet to post any good examples as most are still a WIP...but I hope to be able to do several styles and draw in different kinds of crowds.
Im always open to advice and critiques, and yes, Ive always been a fan of very curvy/fit pin up style art, so I tend to draw a lot of bodysuit style stuff and women with angular hips, and athletic bodies...and perhaps a bit too much cheesecake here and there. My sister (also an artist) tends to point out that I often overwork the crotches in my work hehe (I am trying to be a bit more subtle in most cases...)
Infinity was a big hobby of mine for a long time and still is one of my hobbies, though I have not played or painted in many months, it is originally how I ended up posting work on here because I saw a lack of fan art for such a great world with diverse designs and I really wanted to share the characters! I am glad to hear you know of it.

Yeah, I guess with the internet around the world is a pretty small place. True, Alex is boss at photobashing haha and you did mention you liked photobashing too.
Well you just need to put in the effort in the direction you wanna go and get more milage. Art isn't a talent, its just a skill like any other, unless you're a genius then yes, you're talented. haha
Its good that you're so humble, taking constructive criticism graciously is a great way to speed up the learning process. And I'm don't mind the cheesecake, Michael like cheesecake too plus I'm also hips guy myself. LOL. But art is self-expression whether you're a hobbyist or a pro or a hobbyist going pro, so if sexy women in tight clothing and other kinds of cheesecake is your thing, I don't think anybody who truly understands art is going to judge you.
Yeah! I've only played a few times before running out of time, but it was fun while it lasted.

It was more his style of military/tactical concept art that drew me in, not specifically photobashing, all though I do watch many bashers who keep a military theme.
Agreed, although I personally believe that you can be naturally gifted/talented in certain skills as well. Like you say though, practice is still key and unfortunately I dont draw every day. Maybe someday I will be able too!
We try to keep realistic about it and appreciate everyones view and opinion. That's not to say I always agree, but I am least willing to hear advice if given in a polite manner, which most respectable artists do...
Glad we are on the same level, does that make you a hipster? lol
I agree it certainly is about expression, I suppose since my favorite styles tend to be concept art and pin up, my tendencies fall somewhere between the two. Sexy Concept art?
I enjoy the world of Infinity and the collecting/painting aspect more than the actual gaming, but just another of my many hobbies I have no time for lol

Alex has always had a liking for guns and military stuff, he shoots guns all the time. One of the many perks of being an American. The only time I got to shoot weapons was during my time in the military, boring as hell, but I got some useful memories when designing military stuff. But then again I'm pretty sure Alex has never seen some of things I've seen during that time, so I guess I've got a "slight" advantage in that area. Still it's so unfair he's from America LOL.
I hope you do, being able to draw everyday is a joy in itself. Thats pretty punny! No one has ever call me a hipster for that reason. haha. Draw whatever makes you happy, don't draw it if it bores you.
Same, tabletop games are super time consuming. Thats why I stick to pen and paper RPGs you can just pause and resume at any point in the game.

Ive alway had a liking for military/scifi stuff in particular, and was raised shooting decently often. My whole family (my dad before he died, siblings, close friends etc) are pretty gun savvy and own or collect them. So I am quite used to them as well. I too live in America right now...it has its pros and cons of course. Though Id say pros probably outweigh the cons at the moment.
I found it to be a better usage of the word...you are so right. I always hated those classes that made me draw apples and vases...yawn. Im not against learning new techniques and being encouraged to draw new things, but when you arent "feeling" the passion, it makes it very hard to enjoy it at all, and I dont like it when my drawing or painting feels like work.
A bunch of friends and I have a long going Pathfinder game, but otherwise I havent delved much into table top RPGs...and miniature games are here and there as well, I sort of go through hobby phases and burn out on one and move to my next til I come full circle lol

I think so too, American people are always so supportive of the creative industries. Artists and musicians are paid enough so they can focus on their craft and not have to worry too much about food or getting a house. In Singapore we barely got anything...we work till our bodies and minds ache and we still can barely scrape together a living, and all the creative industries like games studios are left to fend for themselves, Singaporean companies and enthusiasts refuse toΒ sponsorΒ them, so we can't grow as artists. MostΒ Singaporeans don't give a damn about art or culture. Did you know that half the schools in Singapore don't have art teachers? And when they hire foreign talent to do our art for us, the people say "Wow! This is beautiful! Singaporean artists can't perform like that!" or "Singapore artists are not good enough to go international." Because all the Singaporean artists of international standard are too busy worrying about being able to afford a place to stay than trying to complete with the international market. It doesn't help that Singapore is in the top 5 most expensive places to live list.
Sorry for the rant I needed to get that out.
True those kinds of classes are a bore, but they're a good way to get started, if you can find the right teacher. Haha yea, the reality is drawing can be a pain sometimes but I normally just bulldoze right through it cause if don't complete my projects in time I don't get paid haha. And they don't pay much so I really gotta go at it full force.
I've tried pathfinder before too! We only had time for 3 sessions but it was really fun while it lasted! Now I'm playing Titan's Grave, whenever you're free to play with friends I think you should give it a try.

I have heard mixed things about Singapore from multiple sources, including Alex himself. Some people seem to love it and say its so grrand, others complain about all the nit picky "we will watch you all the time" stuff. It's dizzying. I am very intrigued by it though, I wouldnt mind a visit. I actually was considering FZD design school for some time, I may still try to do that at some point. I am still a bit undecided. At any rate it sounds like a very interesting place, though it is a shame as you say that so many natural born folks cant seem to focus where they would like too because of its unique situation...
I will tell my friend who runs the games to look into it, hes always looking for a new RPG for us to try...(again like I said, you should do a Kickstarter)

Alex kinda liked Singapore the first time he was here, and don't get me wrong Singapore is a wonderful place to visit, its very beautiful and clean and safe thanks to our strong government but he saw it from an expat's point of view and on his second trip here to complete his advanced diploma he seemed to have realized the kind of financial pressure the locals are under everyday. Singapore has experienced exponential growth over the last 30 years or so and that has created some very unique financial situations, we've been rated the most expensive city in THE WORLD twice in the last 10 years! No joke! And plus artists are seen as school drop outs or stupid people who can't do anything else, and thus are taken for granted which make our financial situation even worse.
Thanks to FZD we have quite a few international standard artists which is really cool, but only the lucky handful of these artists get seen by the right people at the right time on places like DeviantArt and get to work outside the country where there are REAL opportunities. The rest of us are just fighting to survive and hoping that we can one day draw for a living and not being under bullied/underpaid. I mean I remember my first freelance job from overseas, I could eat and buy luxury items like ps4 games for 7 months with one pay check! And that kind of pay is normal for artists in many countries! That was when I realized that people like me need to make Singaporeans realize that we have no real culture and no great artists because we don't appreciate creative individuals who can make those things happen.
Wow. I am really in a ranting mood aren't I? lolol.
Oh yea you should! Titans Grave is by Wil Wheaton and other famous people! Its based on the Fantasy Age system so its really fun.

Yes, the expense is one of the things that concerns me about potentially trying to go to school there...I dont know how I would do that AND be paying on the School loan itself. Argh! Plus trying to find a place to live that I could afford...
Ranting is fine by me, you have a right to rant...I can totally see the frustration there, it seems unfair for sure. I think freelance work sounds scary because I have a high number of bills and would need to secure jobs almost constantly, I dont know how you could always stay ahead without feeling the pressure of having things lined up to do after the current projects finished, and that is not even taking into account the projects that fail or fall through!

michaellimsstuff In reply to GraySharkStudios [2016-01-15 03:22:30 +0000 UTC]
Yea, for the first time in decades Singaporeans are becoming homeless faster than the government can work to resolve the issue. And they are working on it lolol.
Thanks but I'm done ranting haha. Life in Singapore IS unfair but I realized I'm just wasting precious time by ranting, when I could have spent that extra 2 hours making money to live.
Freelance has never been a first choice for me either, I know its scary with MDAs to sign with companies a Β thousand times larger than you, and companies that you know will replace you after the first piece of work you do, but a man's got to eat! I also despise 'working while not going to work' or coming home from work only to continue doing other people's projects other than my own and you're right, lots of the freelance projects I've done end up not seeing the light of day. But working one job it's not a choice most of us have here, if we want a roof to live under that is.

Well at least your country stands a chance at a fix. Mine is too large and too messed up to ever be repaired, and I dont just mean with the poor or homeless. Singapore is at least a manageable size for the most part and has a real strive to be among the elite places in the world to live, which is a admirable attitude at any rate, despite some of the shortcomings that arise because of this desire, it has at least proven to be a country striving to better itself.
I probably would never do freelance full time unless offered a fairly secured, long term (or at least decently long) position somewhere. I cant say for sure obviously until (and even if) those situation arose, but that is how I feel about it at the moment. Using it as supplemental and still having a part-time job does seem obtainable though, or at least something I would consider more seriously.
Then again maybe I will find a significant other who makes enough for me to do it regardless, who knows!

That I can agree on, a small country is much easier to manage than a large one, but for now our economy is really messed up in a pretty unique way. Most people are just telling us to wait it out, but many people don't have the time or the money to wait for that long, many people would end up in poverty long before this rubbish blows over.Β
Totally agree to that! But having a girlfriend can go both ways so don't rely to heavily on that, but then again a man IS allowed to dream isn't he? HAHA!

GraySharkStudios In reply to michaellimsstuff [2016-02-20 21:29:59 +0000 UTC]
That is unfortunate and I am sure nobody from the outside can tell you anything on it, you see it from a special dynamic of living in it. At any rate, at least overall, your country strives to grow (the success of that not really accounted for but still)
True, but hopefully the partner you end up with would be understanding and want you to do well! Yes, exactly! (Although, I guess it sounded like I didnt want to work didnt it lol!)

You're right, I should count my blessing I suppose. And I suppose I will have to wait it out, not like I have much of a choice now that it's happening... as least I can afford internet and food, which is nice... HAHA!
We all want that dream girl who understands don't we? I've been looking for her myself, so far I haven't found a girl who is willing to keep up my "Try everything while you're still young! Let's apply for jobs at Cirque du Soleil!" attitude. Lol.Β

You could consider coming here to America, you would do well here, but then of course, if it meant leaving your family and you are close with them, that could be problematic! I do hope to visit your country even if I dont go toΒ art school there...I also need to get a toilet part from there to finish my Sandtrooper outfit for 501st...(totally off topic lol)
Agreed, I keep thinking I have found them and then weird circumstances cause things to not work out as I foresaw. It is true! We should have that more free spirit, anymore these days, it is too difficult to try new things because you have to keep getting paid to pay bills!

My parents took me to America when I was little, simply setting foot in an American games studio would be a life changing experience for me haha! So far I've only worked at Singaporean, Taiwanese and Japanese studios...how boring, American studios are where the REAL games are made! If I could I would take my entire family along with me to America! The land where nothing is impossible! Oh! You're into cosplay? I've never tried it myself, I think I will someday!
I usually try to get to know the girl for a few weeks first before asking her out, I know thats a super asian habit. I super, super agree! Plus trying new things all the time is a great way to meet new people though I try not to do the really expensive stuff.

Very true, though there are some really solid and well known foreign design companies as well. I think its amazing youve worked for studios at all! Not boring to me lol. I am new to cosplay but always wanted to try it, so I am! Its amazing how the community is so nice to you!
I would prefer to know someone as well, which as it happens, aall of my relationships have started just like that (see? not so asian, maybe more chivalrous yes?) Alas, with limited places for people to meet in big cities, and jobs eating our daylight, it leaves little for the movie cliche bump into a beautiful girl/boy and hit it off right away scenario. Lol oh well, al in good time right!? ...

Sorry for the late reply My internet thingy ran out of data.
True, Sweden has awesome studios but I think America is still better, but as a foreigner it much harder to get in I'm not near good enough ... not yet ... Well, these companies aren't all they're cut out to be, much of the time playing the game companies make and ACTUALLY working for them can be completely different stories, people are usually overworked and underpaid and the only reason why they stay is because they're passionate about the game they're making. Oh yea, you should totally do cosplay, that industry is doing so well right now.
Haha, glad to know I'm not alone. And you're right meeting girls in the big city isn't easy, normally people here just ask and see where it goes but for me it usually goes not where be cause my job was so demanding, but now that I'm back in school ... maaaaybe ...... LOL!
