thanks for having a look at my work.
You asked for comments and/or criticisms. I'll only offer positive instruction and leave the rest up to you. This is only based on my own arty 'upbringing' of which I raised myself.
The art world is great, I've always loved it. I started out by copying stuff by my favourite artists. I have a LOT of heroes and am constantly finding new ones, it keeps ones work fresh and ever evolving.
When i look at your work, I see a fine sense of personal style and also very importantly, it seems to reflect the kind of person you are... spiritual, deep thinking, sensitive, emotional, sometimes a person who beats themselves up for the things they've done wrong (am I right here?). Whatever, keep filling up the sketchbooks. Keep looking around you, you've probably heard this before, but use nature as a guide, keep looking at how the sun reflects from a leaf (eetc). Take it all in, believe me, it's stored in the mind whether you realise it or not, it's there to be called upon when you are artistically ready.
I love your use of graphite, but you may do well to start adding some colour stuff in there too. Just experiment. Buy yourself some good quality tubes of watercolour, a nice wash brush and a thinner round brush for finner work, don't go too small as the work can get very pernickety. Splash the colour around, do it freely, don't be too prcious with your sketchbooks. You will develop your skills after practising... It's gotten you this far right?
Always be objective, look at other people's work and see their strengths and apply that as best you can to your own work.
David Christiana is a fine watercolourist. He works in a lovely loose and delicate style. We are attracted to the things we most vibrate too, so if you are loving his stuff, it means he shares similar passions and a frame of mind. Learn to paint like him for startes, then you'll find you'll reach a pinnacle (they'll keep happening) and you'll be open to other influences. I'd thoroughly recommend (to anyone) to have a look at Alan Lee's art. His book 'The Alan Lee sketchbook' is GORGEOUS. Learn all you can about figure drawing, there are some great sites on the net that'll allow you to download different poses, copy from mags etc.
Getting back to your own art, I can tell you love detail, so pay attention to things like tone, highlights (learn not to overdo them etc), I love the eye you have on your gallery.
I'd also recommend over the years that you do a self portrait each year. It's easy to see the progress you are amaking. Many of the great masters did this.
Also make sure you start rendering as many background elements as you can. Believe me, I did this too, I fell into the trap of just drawing figures and it's important to put them into a surrounding, it is then about a figure relating to his/her environmennt, it can add to the mood, set the scene etc... very important stuff.
In a nutshell, you are doing everything right at this stage, keep it up, you'll see a lot of progress if you make sure you do it every day and if it's what you want to do for a living, don't let ANYONE tell you different.
