It is very simple 
For example my avatar is typed out as:

Resulting in

The same goes for any account that holds an avatar. In fact there are literally hundreds of thousands of what are called "plz" accounts, which are empty user accounts that serve the sole purpose of providing an avatar to be used by the public, whether in conversation, or anything for that matter. A lot of these plzes become very popular simply by word of mouth. I find a lot of them here: *icon-listing , all available in categories in their journals, such as this one: [link]
Of course, if you wish not to use plz avatars, you can refer to the emoticon legend . It's available as a link titled "Emoticons" on the bottom right corner whenever you click "reply" to any conversation.

Thumbnails are not allowed in comments
However non-premium-members such as yourself have the opportunity to use them in:
- Notes (up to 5 thumbnails per note);
- New articles (50 thumbnails per news article);
- dAmn chatrooms (only rooms where thumb sharing is enabled)
As a premium member though you'd be able to use them in more areas:
- Journals (more information in FAQ #66: As a premium member, what extra journal features will I have access to? );
- Artist Comment areas (or descriptions) in your deviations (up to 5 thumbnails)
