Hi
Quick question... Let's say I've been writing a story in comic book form and it's pretty long, like 10 pages a chapter and there's multiple chapters and I'm going to keep the story going. And I want to put in some of these in my portfolio for CalArts. What parts should I put in? Should I put in some of just the beginning that shows the main plot idea, or have separate pages, some showing emotional parts and some showing action parts? Or would it be better to just make some short stories and storyboard them?

hey do you have to take 3D art classes at calarts?
π: 0 β©: 1
reelzmanimation In reply to powertothepancakes [2012-10-29 11:07:22 +0000 UTC]
not necessarily... there are no "3D Art" classes, though we do take classes teaching us about modeling, rigging, and animating things in cg, working mostly in Maya.

Do you have any tips about being comfortable/confident in a figure drawing class? becasue i'm feeling like of scared and ashamed about now

Remember, that nude model art sessions are not about sex. This is about YOUR drawing! You need to go to these sessions to learn anatomy in the best of ways! To truly master anatomy and become an animator this is essential.
Remember, this is not about a naked person in the room, this is about the study of draftsmanship, human anatomy, the the nudity is just a means to an end. You need to allow your self to study the human form if you want to progress as an artist.
Don't be scared and don't be ashamed! Think about how difficult it is for the model to have 30 people staring at their naked body...
keep drawing!

Hey, how much do you think CalArts cares about shading? I'm starting to draw models and I'm wondering how much time I should spend on shading.
π: 0 β©: 1
reelzmanimation In reply to Kolokino [2012-09-08 23:48:37 +0000 UTC]
Rendering (or shading you could say) is not that important I would say... At CalArts you are going to be an animator. When animating you are not spending time making completely rendered drawings, you need to make quick sketches and animate a scene fast! If you rendered every drawing for a pencil test it would take you months to get one scene done.
Throw in a few rendered drawings like four or five, but makes sure your most strong stuff is the gestural work!

Do you think that just drawing realistic/proportional to real life skeletons or skeletal structures would be good for studying anatomy? I rented a book on artistic anatomy from the library. Iβve been reading it but I havenβt practiced drawing anything from it because Iβm just really uncomfortable with drawing naked people. Are skeletons okay? Or is there anything I can do to get rid of the discomfort?

reelzmanimation In reply to Kolokino [2012-07-30 06:40:15 +0000 UTC]
I understand your uncomfort. I was a sophomore when I started going to live figure drawing sessions with nude male and female models! It is definitely scary at first, but you get over it fast because the nudity is just a means to an end really. Be mature and understand you are there for YOUR artistic skill. I would find a way to overcome your fear at some point. Since your young you don't really need to worry yet, but try to get over it if you want to jump into this art form. (Plus you don't have to worry about the models cause they are used to people looking at them naked)
Smart move lifting the Artistic Anatomy book. Draw every bone, draw every muscle, draw every diagram 'till you have them engrained in your head. If you have knowledge of the body's muscles and bones it will give all your drawings strength. It took me a while but I truly see it apply in my work.
Most important though, be working on your proportional work. Go out and do drawings from life. Go to the park and draw people. Observe. Train your eye. And start looking at anatomy books with photo reference if you can't find a figure drawing class around.
Start learning anatomy now! Your draftsmanship means the world in this industry.
Talk soon!

Like I said before, much of your work you are focusing on a bit too contour. The key to animation is figuring how to draw the shapes with in an object. Everything is made up of shapes, again I know it sounds rudimentary and elementary but there is NOTHING more important to learn. Figure out how to turn things in space. Also you are taking too long on some of your drawings I think, I see you did one of a parakeet that took 40 minutes, no offense but that drawing looked like it could have been done in 5 minutes or so. You should try simplifying your work. Something that has really helped me get better is that learning that simplifying will do wonders. You would be surprised how many times I have gotten around a drawing problem when all I had to do is simplify it. The good news is that my drawings looked A LOT like yours a few years ago. It means that progress can be made and the getting better at drawing IS something you can learn. So get a sketchbook and take it EVERYWHERE! DRAW DRAW DRAW!

Sorry I havenβt got back with you I was sick for a week and I am having some family issues. I wont be able to draw at every opportunity like I have been doing I used to draw 5 hours a day during the school year and I planned to do more in the summer but now I won't even have 30mins to myself to draw because I am now a temporary guardian of 3 kids they will be with more until October so I deiced it's best not to shoot for Calarts this year but go to a community college and try to apply in 2014. I think that will be the best and I will have more access to figure drawing classes by then.
Oh, have also been trying to read (when I have "spare" time ) Kimon Nicolaides' The Natural Way to Draw, Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist's Guide to Form, Function, and Movement by Valerie L. Winslow and
Force by Mike Mattesi
And with the parakeet drawing it didnβt take me 40 mins to draw that it took me about 5-10 mins I added the time I took researching it anatomy and observing the bird (I forgot why I added it together but I wonβt be doing that anymore)

Love the Mattesi books, I got them all.
Just keep drawing thats my biggest suggestion! DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW. Always have a sketchbook with yuh and keep a sharp eye.
I know you have children to worry about but you might even find some great studies of them too. Sketch some gestures. You never know.
Read and study as much as you can, and then apply everything you have learned. I can't say that enough. Just keep drawing and keep your dream alive and don't be afraid to chase it!

I was talking to some animation artists that work at Riot (They made League of Legends, idk if you've heard of it xD) and they suggested some books for hopeful animation artists! Thought I'd share with you.
The ILLUSION OF LIFE by Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas & The Animator's Survival Kit
I think I'll be picking these up with my next financial aid.
Also, how much animation practice do you actually have? I've never gone into a program like Maya x_x I need to get on that...
π: 0 β©: 1
reelzmanimation In reply to Kamivicious [2012-02-12 06:38:06 +0000 UTC]
I already have a big collection of animation books. Including The Illusion of Life. I have read that book several times. Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston are among the greatest animators who have ever lived. They were part of a collective of elite Disney animators during the golden and silver age of classical animation called Walt Disney's Nine Old Men. Illusion of Life is arguably the best book ever written on character animation. Character Animation is much different than just animation.
I also have The Animator's Survival Kit, written by Richard Williams. Another fantastic animator and artist. He is famous for directing the animation on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That book is best for the technical side of HOW to animate.
I would suggest picking up "Dream Worlds" by Hans Bacher, "Character Animation Crash Course" written by one of the top three animator's living today Eric Goldberg (often regarded as a modern Ward Kimball) Another I would suggest that I also have is "The Alchemy of Animation" written by Don Hahn.
Lets hang out some time soon and we can go drawing man!
