haha, it's basically just a bunch of emotes painstakingly stacked together xD (I created the giant smiley face from scratch). Do you know how to use the 'plz' emotes?

lol okay now I get to ramble on about emotes xD

Basically there are three types of icons on deviantart.

• The first type is deviantart's original icons such as  and     etc. You used to have to type them out but now there's an "add media" button on the bottom of the typing box. This allows you to type in keywords and just click on the icons you want to use.

• The function also allows "Community Emoticons", the icons made by any deviant, to appear in this search. This is a very new function. Any deviant can submit an icon they've made into the category "usable emoticons" and it will appear.

• The third type of icon is how emoticon makers made their icons usable before this "add media" thing. It's what I call the good ol' fashioned emotes. I prefer to use them even though they're more effort, because I'm an old geezer who doesn't like change . 

They basically exploit the avatar (profile pic) function.

The avatar function allows you to put in other peoples', and your own, avatar.

   Type ": icon _(username)__ :" without the spaces.

The icons I use are basically deviant accounts created for the sole purpose of being an icon you can use. These are called 'plz' accounts because they usually end in 'plz' to show it's an icon account.

When you see one you like, you just roll your mouse over it and wait for the yellow box thing to pop up and show its username.
