hi bud i just saw your question on a group for tattoo art "how to start a portfolio" an figured id throw in my 2cents im also just starting out in the tattoo scene and had to build a portfolio in a matter of weeks so here's what i did i went through all my old pictures that i drew and picked the best (i only had 2 that i thought would be good enough for the portfolio) then i found 2 designs on this site and copied them but i stated they were not my original art work on the back and was open to the fact that i had seen the designs on here and liked them so much i copied them. then i took pen to paper tattoo artists like to see line work so things like stars, koi carp, scrolling banners ect ect i did 8-10 of these with no shading or colour. then i did 5 more with nice crisp lines but added shading (they like to see shading, lines and use of colour) then did some japanese themed things to show my use of colour. when i went for my interview the artist said he likes my work but also wanted to see sketches with the mistakes (i dont know if other artists are inclined this way so i wouldnt do that unless he asks) as well as lots of drawings of hands as that was my weak point so i go back soon to find out if im up to scratch. you should be knocking out art every day to keep your skills sharp, as well as book on how to draw as many as you can afford and read every page id also try putting in differant styles of art like anime, portraits, old skool tattoo, new school stuff, trible, lettering etc etc its not easy becoming a tattoo artist iv been trying for 2 years but if it is what you wanna do then you will nt mind that. good luck and keep drawing i hope this helped

heya no problem its a tough business to get into, i dont think they would be interested in how you have progressed, more how you are currently but if you have work that you feel is worthy of being viewed i would take it but like i say they do want to see some good work you have to remember that there will no doubt be more people trying to get an apprenticeship and you have to show them your the best (hence why i said read art books the more you know the better off you are). there is no way to do lettering fast except lots of practice, find a font web site pick a few that you like and spend the day copying it over and over until you know it off by heart then try inventing your own. im the same with lettering its some thing im going to star working on soon. and just keep at it if your still in school see if there are art classes you can join do every thing you can to expand your knowledge. how old are you i see in your username 97 so your 14? if thats the case you may have to wait until your 16-18 before you can tattoo. i dont know the law in the USA but that means that you have plenty of time to become a really well trained artist wish i had spent more tme drawing when i was younger lol

thank you for replying and no 97 is just my favorite number i was born in 95 so im 16 now but i signed up for my first 2 art classes i will have ever have taken(drawing and painting, ceramics and sculpture) i too wish i was drawing for longer then i have been its hard to progress you know lol.in New york(where i live) its 18 to even work in the tattoo shop so tattooing is older mostly plus competition is most likley extremely high.would you by any chance know some good books i should read the only one i have ever read was drawing on the right side of the brain(i highly recomend it),thanks again zach

ill check that one out pal thanks, yeah i bet NY is a hard place to brake thru. its a busy city so your must is standing out from the crowd and showing your own style and origanality
i recomend [link]
i know its a english link, but there must be some like it over ther its very good to get back to basics as the basics are often the parts that are over looked. also a book called anatomy for the artist is very good as its very indepth and shows muscle lay outs and bone structure. but for the most part any detailed how to draw books are a must
sorry for my spelling im very tierd mate, also thanks for your comment on my joural i felt it was stupid but i guess if it can help ppl brake into the tattoo scene maybe its a good idea
