I take it you're using 3d delight to render these if you have an Nvidia graphics card with over 4 gigs of ram try using Iray for better results

I use 3ds max 9 amd 3ds max 2017 with mental ray. I dont see how the graphics card would speed up rendering, the processor runs at 100% and the memory can go up to 20Gb for the calculations, then drops to do the actual render. i7 3.2, 32Gb ram, Titan x 12 Gb, 3Tb storage.

I wasn't talking about speeding it up I was talking about being able to use a render engine that can calculate light in a more realistic manner
if you have a titan with 12 gigs of v ram that is more than enough to cope with heavy textures and scenes though normally the graphics card will always be faster than the CPU try Daz studio it's free and comes with Iray though I'm Suprised you aren't getting better results with mental ray
