Description EDIT: I hardly could sleep after the comments & critiques on those awful mountains on the right, so I just had to fix them
I hope it looks better now...
Thanks for your help!

Another totally random high-poly (52 820 272 422) scene ...though I think I've never made a scene with these lighting/atmospheric effects; the sun has just begun to rise behind the camera

Rendered in Vue 7.5 Infinite
Clouds: AsileFX

Thanks for viewing!

awww yeah I feel your pain . 3D art is something that requires a good system...or you'll end up in a mental hopsital I know, not long ago I had a DualCore with 3 gigs, and even that wasn't enough for high-poly scenes. damn I had to render a scene in parts then put them together in PS

I still get scenes in the billions, though! That the funny thing! But if I crank up the setting and use nicer anti-aliasing schemes...my ass is grass and it will require at least a day or two. I've gone 6+ days of rendering before, so at least it's stable! Hehehe! I probably won't even mess with dual core and just got straight to quad. I don't upgrade often obviously and take huge leaps. As much as I would love an i7 Extreme, that won't be happening at $1k for the CPU.

Thank you! Yeah it's pretty different from my other renders, but sometimes you need to make something different to keep it up
btw I changed the terrains on the right...check it

I simply love it!
And I didn't notice anything about the mountain until I read the comments ... so it cannot be too bad, the overall impression is wonderful

hahhaha that's a great disadvantage of critiques; if someone loved your work and is about to write a full-positive comment, they read the other comments and notice the faults right away
I changed the terrains on the right to procedural terrains with a custom function.
Thank you

Cool though the mountains on the right are a touch jiggly! The eco system is stunning in that light!!!

Thank you! Yeah, standard terrain editing is something I really should improve...duh

Vue's built in mountain fractal isn't very interesting. I would suggest creating a procedural terrain with a terrain fractal, increase the resolution to 512 or so, then convert it to a standard terrain. You can run out of memory quite easily with more than 1024 resolution standard terrains so procedural ones, whilst taking much longer to render, often produce better results with less chance of memory meltdown... (I have 8GB these days and the difference between that and the 3GB I used to have is: hardly any crashes and free resources hovering, always, around 60%-80%; no need to restart the program to regain resources. Seems the developers only really cared about 64bit systems with a heap of memory (which is stupidly cheap at the moment). Oops, a bit off-topic!)

Yeah, you can't get too far with standard terrains. I changed the terrains on the right to procedural terrains, and used a custom function I made and saved earlier. I run Vue on x64, with a QuadCore and 6 GB RAM (8 soon ), so no worries

Oooh, you stole my title!!

Nice. But I think the mountain in the front/right looks out of place compared to the rest of the scene.

damn I'll kill that mountain!!! will I ever make a scene without screwing something up?? btw what do you mean? How should they look like?
lol btw THAT'S why the title was so familiar ...I even thought maybe I gave a title like this to one of my old deviations

Well, it looks like one of those Eran Dinur like terrains - a standard "default" terrain, stretched vertically, then tilted a little. There are too many "spikes"/protrusions. A large scale mountain in such an area would be more softer because of the snow (?) and the fluvial erosion. If you replace it with a more believable terrain, I think the piece will look terrific!

Btw, the shadow on that mountain looks very "square" - that was the first thing I noticed in the thumbnail. Not a big deal, but kind of screws up the perception sometimes.

Oh, and I hope you're not doing a follow up piece called "Nightfall"

00AngelicDevil00 In reply to nukeation [2009-06-12 09:35:42 +0000 UTC]

well, I changed those terrains to procedural ones...I hope it looks better now. (that huge shadow disappeared too )
You know, I guess it would be a bit easier to create digital landscapes if I saw different RL landscapes in different places with my own eyes, but until I can afford to travel more, the only things I can count upon are online photos and my imagination.
No, I'm not planning to make a piece called Nightfall...but thanks for the tip ...why btw?

nukeation In reply to 00AngelicDevil00 [2009-06-19 03:18:38 +0000 UTC]

Nightfall was the sister piece to my Daybreak one. I posted them both together.

Ooh, now after your enhancement this one looks terrific!!

About learning landscapes, do what I did before I started travelling - National Geographic and Dorling Kindersley both have these great books about different natural locations in the world. Get one of those books. Very helpful! I recently got a NG book called "Biography of the Earth" - not completely about the natural world but some VERY inspiring and educational natural scenes in the book. Well worth the money.

Actually, Cynthia is preparing a whole photo reference book made especially for Vue users. We'll put in all the photos we took while travelling, along with explanations and descriptions of the scenes and the natural formations. Not sure when we'll have those out tho.

Thank you!

The photo reference book is a great idea! And yeah, sometimes I check NG photos, but lately I check Flickr quite often. I've found so many amazing references there!
