This is Terry. They're a Tulpa (Which is basically a sentient imaginary friend) created out of the desperate loneliness of their host and makes it their mission to make the host as happy as possible, mainly by creating interactive fantasies for the host to play around in and ignore reality.

Of course, this bid to protect their human from the cruel reality involve actively sabotaging any possible or ongoing interactions with other people. This mental tampering is also the result of an unadmitted fear of becoming obsolete and forgotten by the host, so they can be quite controlling and paranoid when push comes to shove. Think a helicopter parent and you're somewhere.
