01Salty — Defiant the 'Castle Class' Engine

Description Defiant is a Great Western Railway 'Castle Class' engine, who attended a special event at the National Railway Museum in York, of which James was a special guest. He introduced James to the other engines in the exhibit, and told him of the old days during the war, and working with Duck at Paddington.

Defiant is currently residing at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre on static display.

so why were these locos have the pistons set to the rear leading truck, insead of the middle of them?

More than likely, it's to make access to the inside cylinders easier. The Castles, Stars, Kings, Princesses, and Duchesses all had their cylinders set  back because they had four cylinders instead of three.
