A sharp knife, same as doctors use.

that is so pretty, the simplicity of the idea mixed with the detail of the actual piece is stunning!

the fact that Ive never actually seen it executed this way before, in photography. I could see this piece of art spawning a new trend for aspiring artists, bravo! I hope someone features this, it really deserves it.
Sorry about this fragmented comment lol.

At this technique you always have to cut away the things that don't belong to the figure. In this case I had a black sheed of paper and cut away the parts that are now to be seen as white.
As for the symmetry, I actually thought about this solution as well but in the end I chose this version, since in the other the rear part of the mantis was way to near to the border so that it looked wired.
I am glad that you have interest in this technique. I personaly love it since it makes a lot of fun to work with it. The knowledge that one single false cut can ruin the whole thing gives you some kind of excitement and you can concentrate by 100% on your work.

I'm just furious that no one has commented on this!
Out of curiosity - do you cut away the white paper, and layit on top of the black, or cut the pattern in black and lay it on white? (or something else i haven't thought of?)
I'm thoroughly impressed with this, and totally agree, that it is a highly unusual piece of art to find on deviantart. I can't think of any improvements really, barring that personally, I would have given the top of the image a few more pixels worth of height (in the white that is) as then the amount of white from the corner to the edge of the 'rock' it is climbing would be symetrical with the left hand bottom corners distance from the start of the incline. But that's just me.
I also took a very quick glance at your gallery, you appear to be an accomplished artist, and hopefully I shall get back for a longer peruse!
I find it very likely I will be featuring this, and on the smallest chance I don't, I will certainly be giving you a highly recommended link!

I see.
Yeah, I could see how if the image was too caged in, it would affect the lines too much.
I must admit, I'd be very scared to take on something like this, because of the possibility of ruining it! One of the reasons I love oils is that they are semi self repairing!
